Here lies the true second age of thrash metal coming. After 9 years of hiatus, after the benefit shows(Thrash of the Titan) for Mr Chuck(Chuck Billy was diagnose with cancer),after change of line-up here and there, after a reunion, the GUYS decided to give another shot.Ironically, the band has dedicated this album "FOR THE Fan"— and they did that with style, and a pinch of old school flavour.
I hand picked a few songs for this review.
Songs kick start with "For the Glory Of", a simple yet intriguing intro to the album. More Than Meets the Eye" and "The Evil Has Landed" are the best catchy song the band has ever delivered, which was some how or rather the band miss in their younger day.Reminisce of their past work "Souls of Black" can be heard on "Killing Season" ,a song that overtime will get into your head, yet it satisfy you immensely everytime u listen to it. To bring out the melodic old-school stuff , "Henchmen Ride" not only intensified it, it also contain a driving double-kick gallop and scowling power metal ingredients. ".Titles like "Dangers Of The Faithless" and "Afterlife" imply a certain religiosity, and seeing as how vocalist Chuck Billy is a cancer survivor, the concept of faith may have played a role.
Don't bother knowing about the band faiths or beliefs, whatever it is,this is a killer comeback, one that benefits greatly from the return of Alex Skolnick solos as impressive always. Not all is golden, however. The album title track falls a bit flat on the whole as Billy's vocals shift into full-on death mode, sounding forced and out of context. But we'll give him credit for that, 'cause criticisms aside, the album stands as one of the year's best metal offerings thus far. It won the "Best Album" award at Metal Hammer's Golden Gods Awards ceremony on 16 June 2008, beating albums by Atreyu, Avenged Sevenfold, Children of Bodom and Down. In addition, Metal-Rules.com voted it the best metal album of 2008.
My Last Say:
Testament, over the past 20 years or so, has garnered much respect for sticking to its guns throughout fads and trends. With a fiery mix of vintage thrash, melodic metal and attitude to burn, this new album is as potent and as timely as anything currently on the scene.
Move over all you newer Thrash Metal bands. TESTAMENT is back to reclaim their throne as some of the greatest Thrashers of all time – and “The Formation Of Damnation” is their proclamation.
The Thrasher Has Indeed Landed on its rightful throne.
Album Recommend For: Old School metal lover who really miss the Thrasher Years
Songs that kick-start the whole album: The Evil Has Landed
