Creation of jamming studio..

Hey guys... I'll hijack...

I've heard that using EGG cartons to line the walls of your room is a pretty good cheap sound proofing method. Anyone done this before?? No jam studio for me.. but I like to play my guitar nice and loud.. heh heh..

blueprintstudios: alright thanks.. point taken..

egg cartons are those sponge sound proof material right?? im plannin to get those kind...

Egg cartons and sponge are not for sound proofing. They just help to reduce sound reflection in the room.

AMERICA MAT: A closed cell foam that is both acoustically absorbent and fire proof. The America Mat is a valuable material for use in applications requiring maximum sound reduction. The America Mat is used often in automobiles, planes, and boats to reduce the amount of noise.

AMERICAN LEAD TAPE: A 5 mil thick tape used for sealing American Mass Loaded Vinyl seams. This tape is used when your require additional soundproofing at the seams of your MLV. This tape is not recommended for ceiling use as its ability to remain applied on a ceiling application is hampered by its sheer weight.

AMERICAN MASS LOADED VINYL (MLV):A reflective barrier material that weighs one or two pounds per square foot. This material is used primarily for blocking sound through a partition such as a wall or floor/ceiling. It is rated at 26 STC points in the one pound variety and 32 STC points in the two pound version.

hope this helps...

a mixer is needed unless you want shitty vocal quality cause you can adjust the eq on the mixer. A simple behringer or mackie mixer will do if you're not fussy.

oh ok.. thanks for the info on sound proof materials (Apalcos) and thanks for ur suggestion kerplunk182.. to kerplunk182 and everyone else.. would a Tapco Mix 100 be ok??

oh ok.. thanks for the suggestion.. hmm.. im actually under a kinda tight budget.. so i don think i'll be gettin a Warfdale Mixer la.. is tha Tapco Mix 100 ok?? i don wanna spend too much money man..

James u mentioned that the egg cartons dont soundproof, If i was to lets say put a layer of thin styrofoam/sponge over the walls then egg cartons and then another layer of some thick cloth, would that help? Sorry if im going off topic, quite interested in this

my guitarist turn his room to a mini jamming room not much sound proofing bu he use egg carton up on his walls and he remove his windows cover it with a wood i think... i'm not so surewith tat... and mostly the things he uses are diy... well we do have session at his house but we prefer jammin at a proper jammin studio...
well i suggest if u wan to turn your room to a jammin studio...
y not rent a place and turn tat place to a jammin studio...
u guys get to jam and not much of a hassle only the money issue...
well just an opinion...
got a group of frens who open up a jammin studio for their band uses and also other bands and they only make 1 room for jammin only...
fyi...
well good luck in turnin your room to a jammin studio...
cheers

Well Good Luck With Your Jamming Studio Creation
Maybe You Can Give Us Softies Special Rates To Jam There

It'll probably only help with the acoustics of the room... Don't quote me on this, I need to go read up more to back this up, but from what I know, egg cartons (even with sponge or styrofoam) underneath it, will only act to dissipate the soundwaves within the room, so you don't get a very harsh sound (ie. how your drumset will sound like if you're playing in a small room with bare concrete walls). The concept is the same as playing in your room vs playing in your room, but with more people in it.

Soundproofing is not about dissipating the soundwaves, its about reduction and absorption. You could (in theory) have multiple layers of dense, yet soft material to absorb the soundwaves, but because not all materials can absorb the different frequencies of sound, you'll either need to spend a lot of money on multiple layers of different materials (that don't come cheap if I may add), or have really thick layers that'll make your room very small. That's damping of sound.

For professional soundproofing, its the room within a room method, where a smaller room is created within your room, and the space in between padded with acoustic foam or sound absorbant material. But then again, this method is very expensive because you're building a room from scratch, and the room has to be built so that it doesn't have anything that touches the outer room, preventing any transmission of sound. Sound is effectively isolated within that room alone.

I was reading an article on acoustic foam that says that acoustic foam works by dissipating sound energy as HEAT energy, as it increases air resistence, which results in a reduction of the amplitude of the soundwaves. Anybody well versed in sound engineering can confirm this? Physics majors too haha... an alternative source of energy perhaps? Heat energy from acoustic foam used to heat up water, and the steam used to drive turbines to generate electricity. ;)

Oh anyway, don't think about renting a space to jam unless you're serious about going far with your band, or you have a few people who're generous enough to help you with it. Rental doesn't come cheap in land-scarce Singapore...

Hdb Jamming Studio

I read with interest to create a jamming studio in a room within a room , I am up for a studio soon and had ready acquired those necessary instrument. But how loud you should played if let say you had already soundproof the room. Maybe any one here has a photos to show how the room is done angle by angle this way we could replicate or get it as a guide, if u soundproof the room does it include the ceiling and floor . thanks for starting this thread and those who had response to it.

If you have soundproofed a room, you will be able to play as loud as you want with minimal to no sound leaking out.
