hi, i love music and i don't know if i am nuts of not... maybe.. i too late then pick up music.. or is there never a too late... i took up 2 guitars classes, 2 vocal classes and 1 composing course... the rest of my week.. i will stay at home to practise... i seldom meet up with my friends now... i can't say that i'm tired but i really spent time in my evenings and nites to practise and practise.. i kind of lost and confused... i went to libraries to find out more about music and the industry.. there's so much stuff... i'm guess i kind of bloated with lots of information... am i doing the right stuff... i worry about bread and yet i want to put in more time and effort.. kinda of confused.. it's kinda of that i am stuck in the middle...am i too singaporean trained for bread and butter... i kinda really feel stuck.. i don't wanna to like that...

Don't worry. Im the same. Just that everytime i wanna read abt the stuffs, i tend to fall aslp.

(i hate reading)

Anyway. Dont worry la, u're doing what u love most and thats music. I'll do the same, for something i love as much. So that i'll die a happy man! =D

You've gotta learn to relax man. By the way, it's never too late to pick up music! You really seem to have a lot on your hands but don't pressure yourself too much. A lot of us here just take our time and practice. It's important that you feel that the process of practice is fun. And maybe you wanna take some time out inbetween all ya classes to hang out with friends to wind down? I'm sure it'll help.

wah kao.. 8O

relax man.. go at your own pace. there's only so much the human brain can digest at a time..

anyways, we're all crazy bout music here..so its all about exchanging of knowledge and experiences.

bread and butter, i guess it depends on yourself. you want to make music as means of living then work hard for it cos we live in $ingapore, that alone is inevitable.

or u can jst treat it as a hobby, a lifetime hobby.
important thing is.....enjoy the music!

i'm 27.... kinda sad.. i don't know if i'm too stressed.. but it seems very hard.. my friends kinda shock that i suddenly took up so many.. but it seems that i'm too slow and don't know what.. i will feel like want to drop out at times but i can't bear it..

how to interact with people and yet learn at the same time? jam with them!!!

just chill.. take things one by one or you'll end up like me..... 12 mths ago i took up tennis and guitar, 7 months ago i took up golf and drums, 2 months ago i took up skating and bass... and i tell you.. my life's screwed.

hey dude, tiring yourself out isn't the way to learn music man. u gotta enjoy it and take it slowly. music is not like math and science. many tuitions classes aren't going to help u learn music faster.

Hmm, on the assumption you are just starting out, the results don't come that fast. Myself i've had to wait 3 yrs or so before getting much better and finally accomplishing stuff that i could only dream of doing when beginning.

Point is, slow isn't a factor. It's a lot of hard work. But in due time, you'll see the results, that's when you'll start to look at it differently!

EH! dude if u need ppl to jam and play music, find me!

im free everyday. muakakakaa.

age's not a barrier when it comes to music. must enjoy.

in Singapore, we take 2 years of kinder school, 6 years for primary school, 4 years for secondary school and another 3 or 5 years of tertiary education before even stepping into the real world. you cannot attain musical enlightenment in a short time.

music should make your life better not make you more stress.

i don't mind the sacrifice to practise and my friends understand.. at least they will try to drag me out to sing or jog.. just to relax me.. from the guitar lessons.. i don't deny i benefited alot in knowledge and skills.. for vocal.. i learnt too.. come to keyboard.. i start to practise alot too.. i know it's not like maths or science or with tution but i feel i lack out alot alot.. i know i really take alot of classes and it's not that i want to be at the top.. or i don't know if i have to learn to relax. but i really desperate and i think it's getting my nerves.

8) chill out dude...i am 27 too

i took up guitar bout 2 years back..can't say i am good, but i can play a few songs. i pretty enjoy the feeling of playing^^

if you have a band...go and have fun in the studios. music is food for the soul, and you can't rush things..slowly by practise, you will improve.

i respect you for your devotion, but too much of theory and practice makes legolas a bobo shooter^^

go and get the babes...so many out there^^ go orchard rd and google at them^^ relax. find a club and enjoy a beer and google at more girls...relax^^ take life in stride lah bro...

life ain't going to be perfect, nothing is going to be perfect! God makes it so that you will learn to appreciate the sweet moments when you reach the end of the road.

singer_archer,

May I give a little of what I observe in what you said? It seems that there are 2 things you are saying - 1. you love music, 2. you want to make music your career.

You really want to make your career something you like to do - ie music. That's why you tried to marry both of these together.

My suggestion is not to put both of them together - yet. Like any career, we get trained for it. One goes to school to study, then go for some kind of higher education, then get a job and get training for it. Music is no exception. Studying and getting trained for it (as a career esp) takes a long time. It is slightly different from other careers in that it is not just head knowledge that you acquire - it is art.

You're confused because on the one hand, music is what you like. But then you need to eat and earn for a living. What you like to do may not be what you need to do for a living, at least at this stage. By forcing your love for music into a career, you endanger your interest and may eventually kill it. You're so engrossed that you're already starting to draw a circle around your social life.

Better to first separate these 2 entities. Easiest way is to first get a piece of paper and jot down in 2 columns. First - what your skills are: what you have learned in school, what you have done, what you can do in the work force. Are you good in computers? Are you good at numbers? What did you study previously? This may not be what you're really interested in, but it is OK at this stage. Second column - jot down what you like to do. Music is obviously one of them. Any other interest in your life?

Then take one thing at a time. In the skills part, you can start either to - look for a job that best suits your skills, or start to get further training to improve that skills. This is important. You want to develop every aspect of your life - not just in music. You have to think long term (you're only 27 - what will you be doing when you're 47?). For the interest part, you also want to develop it but in a different way. If you really want to make it your career, you have to think - do you have the skills necessary at this stage, musically? If not, then it is not your career - yet. Develop it. You may even want to consider going to music school. But if not, you can still develop it at your own pace - not the super-fast speed you're trying to attain now. Art takes time. Develop it as an interest is sometimes better to try to develop it as a career. The motivations are different and the results can also be drastically different. Many in this forum do music as their hobby and I must say many are really good at it - almost can become their career. That's because of the motivations behind it - they love music and does it not because they must, but because they want to.

Sorry for this rambling. I'm late and I have to run. Can't put my thoughts into a nice sequence. But I just want to encourage you that you're OK. Just take some time to analyse yourself and skills.

I second cheez's advice. It sounds like what you really want is to be proficient at it to make it a career. Keep at it or if you're at a sufficient level, really focus on it. Where you are at right now will determine which you should look into.

Most of what you read in the library is not going to be what it is here in singapore. About jamming with people, sometimes they're either not into the same thing or aren't proficient enough. Find out fast and stop. But when you do find a bunch that can click try to stick with them for as long as you can.

dun worry that's wad happened me when i started falling in love wif music 2 years back...i'm 17 this year by the way....

i go to the library to read up on classical music cause i guess that is my interest but at the same time i'm slowly moving on to other kinds of music such as Jazz and Pop....

i spend an average of 2 hours on my piano but due to work committments currently , it's down to an hour a day.i always feel that i'm not practicing enough even thou my piano teacher says that i could compress 9 weeks of work into 3 weeks of work...but still i'm not satisfied wif myself....

my advice is to take a baby step at a time.go at ur own pace and dun not worry too much about it.in case u did not know...child prodigies in music still need to practice.it does not mean juz so that u're a child prodigy u dun have to practice juz because u know how to play by ear , u know everything to music....but there's a whole new dimension in music other than playing by ear alone...

music is like an never ending path in life.u pick up skills and knowledge along the way.even those professors at ABRSM or any other internationally recognised music college are still learning....

it's possible to balance work wif music but please never let music affect ur work.after a hard day's work , go home take a rest and start on ur music.i really envy u because u have so much time to spend signing up for many music enrichment courses....

there was this organist whom would spend 2 hours on her organ everyday after finishing work.mind u because she started playing the organ at the age of 20+ and a few years later , she became an organ teacher in a music school

good luck

music is continuous and never-ending study.. just have fun while you're doing it.. it's not there to make u stressed out.. actually there to remove your stress.

Just one more thing. Whether it be music or other things, always have a long-term, if not at least a moderate term plan. Many things are meant to be a marathon, not a sprint. If we run a marathon like a sprint, we will get burnt out quickly and never reach the finish line. Plan your goal, set objectives along the way (what do you want to achieve in the first year, next year etc), then enjoy it.

you are all correct.. i tried to marry to both interests and career at the same time... i saw the reply this afternoon and have been pondering over.. i was definately gloomy at work.. i mixed everything up together.. i don't only play music but archery too.. i tried archery before and it fail me. it's safer better don't ask me why... or it's the people that fail me. i tried too hard for what i want and that's why i ended up in this stage. i agree that music is art and not skill and doesn't take just practise alone to be skillful but also pleasure else all of u will not be that passionate. it's not maths or science. i can't say that i stop all my classes but i don't want to put pressure on myself to reach whatever target i have lay for myself. but definately learnt not to take too many at a time. maybe i am greedy to want everything at one time. at least my colleagues was consoling me this afternoon. my thinking is definately clearer. i will try hard but as a hobbist first. i have other skills too.. definately but i want to do something i really like when i'm old.. i'm not sure how... but music is still in my mind... thanks!
