compositions > skill

heyhey i also have the same problem. having a really cool melody, riff or even solo in my head, and when i rush back to pick up my axe and play.....i cant get it out on the fretboard...

slowly lah. we should familiarise ourselves with the fretboard very well in order to dish out those fancy licks. usually i would think of a melody on a scale, and just dot across it here and there, make up my own patterns and so on.

one of the most interesting challenges in music.

cheers ;)

Or use powertab/guitar pro, tab out the song (in case you forgot it). Then practise practisae prastice. Still can't get it? Hone your techniques then meet that melody after a few months. =P

mattleesc, keep ur composition as a practice element. Put it to tab. Practice it.

One day, you'll get there... and you'll find it 2nd nature due to the amount of time spend practicing it!

More "serious" would be effect of NOT being convincing with a new riff due to unfamiliarity IMO.

The new riff doesnt have to be on only guitar, can also be translated on the keyboards n other instruments too..u may wana try adding effects to bring ur riff to life : )

try it for a day...not 24 hours...then sleep...once u wake up and try again..u'll get it..

but if u dun,u'll still get most of it..

but this isnt that frustrating..but rather interesting when it happens to me..

the frustrating part is actually thinking up of a RIFF/SOLO..

hahah. usually i get alot of cool riffs when im bored but i don't have a guitar around me, and when i finally have one, i forget them. damnit.

Haha....I used to have an intresting way to remember melodies...Like those spur of the moment kinda things....I would usually use my phone's recorder and hum the tune out....

Hmm.

Have you seen how David Gilmour scat-sings along to his guitar solo in 'Wish You Were Here' during live performances?

I find it very interesting how he combines the guitar melody with his voice. And that's one way we could do it too... scat-sing it out or as mentioned previously hum it out.

For me, i will try to play around the fretboards when i conjure a melody & then try to find the "g"-spot where the pattern is similar when u move up or down the progression..

dunnoe how to explain though..

AEnimic: use ur hp recorder la.. i use it all the time..
