I'm the vocalist for my band Roadkill. I've been singing in a band for about 2 years by now and i wanna know, do i need vocal lessons? It's been requested that i do so. So, i wanna ask you guys should i do so? If i do, where can i get a vocal teacher and how much will it cost?

Heres a link to my previous gig and my band's myspace.

I sung the lead vocals for the cover of Dying in your Arms.

Hi!

I'll comment on the video first .. looks like the crowd is having fun there :) The yelling part has a lot of energy, that part sounds good! Doesn't sound healthy though.

Ok, the cover of "Dying in your arms" on myspace:

- tone is nice (I think this is one of the most important things)
- sounds very strained
- 1:36 is out of tune (backup vocals also a bit out in this part)
- 2:37 near the end also quite out of tune

No comment on the growly bit :)

Give up singing. You can't sing. Vocal lessons won't help unless you're willing to experiment with your voice to get what is required.

Listening to trivium, then your song, is unbearable.

Unless you're willing to do something drastic, 2 years in a band would have gotten you somewhere.

Good luck.

Don't listen to vipergod .. of course you can sing. Your voice is already well above average. And vocal lessons from a skilled teacher will improve your voice.

If you do choose to take lessons, I recommend Daniel Singh (you can find him on google). He is not cheap but he is very good. He's my teacher.

May I ask why you were recommended vocal lessons? Where are your core problems?

People keep telling me that the vocalist of a band needs to have strong vocals. And also, i wouldn't mind if i could reach some higher notes

Vocals in metal / rock is never an easy feat, personally the amount of energy involved and power needed to bring the music out is vital because its genre lies in roots of strength, dominance and power. You need to have a lot of stamina to pull metal/rock/punk all that off very well..

I can't quite hear the intro of your live maiden cover, cos the cameraman was singing (quite badly, might I add!!) over your voice, but I think you've got the potential to bring your power vocals out if you weren't singing so fast. You can't pull stuff like Maiden off if you're gonna have to rush like that; you end up compromising vocals that need to be projected over the speed by which you had to sing the words. Most likely, to keep up, you'll end up growling, which also, in the end, cuts off in vocal power within keeping time. If it's your band who's asking you to take vocal lessons, you might want to suggest to them playing slightly slower (first) until you get the hang of it. I know the feeling shiok lahh to play fast, but tackle your problems first before enjoying yourself... :P

On the "Dying In Your Arms" cover... like btherl mentioned, some parts were strained and pitchy, although your tone is pretty much there already. Curiously tho, were you were recording your vocals whilst playing guitar, or were you were focusing on the guitar parts whilst singing at any point? I just have to ask, because it appears that you're both a guitarist and vocalist.

Two things imo, which might help reach that "power" you need in your vocals is a good balance of projection and vocal feel.
What I mean by projection here, is that you have to imagine (prep yourself before singing) that you're facing a full audience, and your voice has to reach the guy wayyy at the back. Like I mentioned, I think you've got potential to do that, it's just that you might have compromised your projection over keeping time, and end up swallowing the "power" instead it letting it all out. Once you have achieved enough confidence to pull that off, focus on your feel -- be more confident and let your aggression out. Listen to the lyrics, understand what it's about and how it relates to you, and pretend you're just screaming to tell everyone how you feel (But don't literally scream lah k, you'll freak the fella out). Once you've got these two covered, balance them out with a good amount of half projection and half feel.

Under the circumstance tho, that you HAVE to sing fast, bring out your vocal feel more; since you're playing metal, . So far on the maiden cover, I think you've done a pretty good job with the vocal feel, just that the speed you were singing cut out the vocal power.

Good luck~~

ps. I'm still learning on vocal power as well, and personally that "imagining you're reaching the voice to the guy way back in the audience" imagery helps improve the vocal power :} You might wanna try and see if it works for you too.

thanks for the feedback dude. really appreciate it. but for my vocal style, i'm not really aiming for something like iron maiden. we played the maiden cover during the gig for fun.

for the recording, no i wasn't playing guitar and singing at the same time. i played the lead guitar for the cover and the vocals were done seperately.

btw, it wasn't my band who asked me to take vocal lessons. it was my dad. LOL.

and thanks again for the feedback

Your voice isn't as horrible as some guy above said.
But it isn't very good, it's pitchy firstly. Also, it sounds like you're just standing there trying to hit the notes. As in, there doesn't sound as if there's much emotion being put into it. You sound like alot of secondary school bands, if that makes you feel better.
Your voice is moderate in terms of range, it can hit moderately high notes, but like someone told you, it is weak.
Just keep singing, you'll get better. Don't give up.

EDIT: another thing, about lessons, you can give it a try. i tried going to a vocal teacher and had a bunch of lessons. but they didn't help at all. i just kept singing and my voice got better, i sang a lot.
anyway, if you do get a teacher, get a male teacher, i had a female teacher and being a guy it might have been one of the reasons why it didn't help.

Sorry man! You spoilt the song. Though you've transposed it way too low, it still sound bad. Try not to sing it if you can't carry it. Choose other song that suits your voice. You can sing but not that song.

haha, it's alright. i'm open to critisicm. but may i ask which song are you referring to?

I'm refering to Hallowed be thy name by Iron Maiden. Don't be discourage by some mean comments like mine. Hahaha!! But I'm just saying it out of my truthfulness. I'm surprise young people now a days play that kind of songs too.

You can sing, get the right song that suits your voice. But there are still room for better improvements I must say. Getting vocal coach may help but listening to more music and expand your genres will help you even better. In another words, don't waste your money and time to some vocal theories that don't work. You yourself can make it work if you try harder.

haha thanks man. and yea i listen to alot of older bands and the reason we played hallowed be thy name was to let the crowd enjoy the song as most of them know it. thanks again for the advice

I'm sure aquanaut will have something to say about it and get himself in the deep end of the pool again :-)
