One question:

Have anyone of us seen the SDP newsletter?

Has anyone got a copy of the news which publishes what constitutes to defamation to the government?

i dun see whats the big HOO HA over this upgrading thing anyways.

the residents have to pay quite a HUGE "fair" share of amount for this upgrading scheme. For example, us 70% of the cost they 30%.

For middle-income & low-income residents this may pose more like a burden than an incentive.

IMO, if i have to come out with more than 1k just to see a better place? i rather not.

Besides, i feel upgrading should be DONE appropriately in every area that needs it.

If they fail to see that, all these places reflect the image of our country as a whole...then thats just too bad.

Simple logic, you have a house...it is so called "globally recognised" pple come to view your hse, so if some parts of your house is old and needs maintence and renovating? Do you think YOU should do it? or leave it. Or a better third option, get your maid to pay for it n tell her its worth it coz she`s living in the house too.

It`ll only be fair if residents do not have to cough up a huge sum for upgrading scheme.

so what can we look foward to in the coming months...from our lovely "ManIW"?

Same existing problem(s) in the Community ( if u do community service often enough, you will know.) coz i do. if not u kids better start doing it as what james suggest 8)

Price,taxes HIKE.

Having come up with $ for all the whatsnot.

Lastly, everyone bitching about all the above same old issues when they have clearly chosen the path that depicts it.

On a last note, how can we look at a wider picture and tackle any international issue when internally many are facing problems with "bread n butter" issues? tell me how to fight when i dun even have food n drink to give me strength...

That explains a lot on why young pple these days are not so patriotic eh.

I just have one question ah ... I don't like how the PAP has dangled that 100million dollar upgrading thing ...

As mentioned, politics is one...

IMO, it can be compared to one of the 4Ps in Marketing; Price. The fastest and easiest point that can be a very big enticement, but good customer service (loyalty) has proven otherwise, in this situation.

Good..
More to know and learn about.. :)

Since the election is over, and this thread would soon be pushed to the back. JMO, this is no intentional pun. I am as friendly as ice-cream.

Not that I am some professor, or activist, I've seen some replies that were very much based on superficial knowledge or WYSIWYG (our media) information. I urge that more would read up beyond the papers, and similarly judge that authenticity yourself when you read those comments, experiences, prejudices, facts, secrets and the likes.

I said this because I can see rantings which were totally off and irrelevant, mostly based on emotional intellectuality. Very distasteful, IMO.

Ok, remember. Read more... 8)

It was mentioned... Maybe you missed it...

"My personal view is, our land is expensive. But we have nearby neighbours in Johore, Batam and Bintan. The elderly want to reach their doctors within half to one hour. So retirement villages in neighbouring countries is possible, barring the cross-border hassle. It is best to find cheap land on short leases."

"The criteria — I don't know, I honestly don't know," he said. "I don't tell lies like some people. It's not my style, my character. In my religion, one of the biggest sins is to tell lies; the next birth, you will become a cockroach or something. I take things seriously. What I said, I can deliver. What I can't deliver, I dare not say."

"Right now we have Low Thia Khiang, Chiam See Tong, Steve Chia. We can deal with them. Suppose you had 10, 15, 20 opposition members in Parliament. Instead of spending my time thinking what is the right policy for Singapore, I'm going to spend all my time thinking what's the right way to fix them, to buy my supporters votes, how can I solve this week's problem and forget about next year's challenges?"

Damage Control was finally issued for this above statement, but only like 3, or 5 days later

CONCLUSION- now that the election is over, let's conclude this thread with some final comments. thanks to all who participated.

my take on this election:

*people are beginning to disassociate themselves from suicidal politics, need not mention the parties concerned, we already know who they are.

*the opposition had re-armed themselves intellectually against the government. issues were raised with real concern, not just for the sake of arguement. also, the opposition had introduced credible fledglings.

*the people have chosen beyond political pledges; the govt's promises in opposition wards & their efforts in bringing in senior figures as catalyst, were futility at work

*a party brand name matters- despite fielding fresh candidates, the government still came out tops. people continue to trust the mechanism that works

me too.

PAP's downstairs.
PM Lee CAN SHOUT!
I'm on the 8th floor and... I can hear him even with my windows closed. :D

Singapore opposition politician arrested for allegedly threatening election officials

By EN-LAI YEOH
Associated Press Writer

SINGAPORE (AP) -- A Singapore opposition politician was arrested Sunday for allegedly threatening the country's election officials, a day after he failed to win a seat in national elections, an aide said.

Workers' Party candidate James Gomez was arrested Sunday for alleged "criminal intimidation," his aide Jacob George said. Gomez was attempting to leave the country but was stopped by immigration officials, who turned him over to the police.

"We don't know the specifics, but it could be due to the minority certificate," said George, referring to an incident when Gomez initially accused officials of misplacing his election papers more than a week before Saturday's election.

He subsequently apologized after security camera footage showed he put the form into his bag. The academic claimed he was distracted.

Gomez was part of a five-member Workers' Party team that contested a multimember ward against the ruling People's Action Party, where a minority candidate is compulsory.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's PAP won 82 of 84 seats in Singapore's 10th general elections since independence in 1965.

"Police received a complaint against James Gomez from the Elections Department, and police are investigating," said police spokeswoman Siow Cheng Cheng. She did not elaborate.

A security official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with policy, said Gomez has not been charged. If found guilty for criminal intimidation, Gomez could be jailed for up to seven years.

It is not immediately clear why the elections department waited till after the polls to file the complaint.

The incident was played up by ruling party politicians and local media, which rarely deviate from the government line.

Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew, called Gomez, 40, "a liar" and a "bad egg."

"He's not a fool ... He's saying he's got brains," elder statesman Lee was quoted on state-broadcaster Channel NewsAsia's Web site as saying. "Well, what do you use those brains for?"

Lee is the father of the current prime minister and wields considerable influence as "Minister Mentor" in his son's cabinet.

The PAP said they targeted Gomez, a researcher with a Stockholm-based institute, as it was an issue of credibility.

This is TOO MUCH. this is making me sick. LHL is living up to his promise of FIXING the opposition, right after the elections finishes. Whatever inroads the WP has made, the PAP intends to wipe it out. I wonder what kind of country we are living in...dissenters sent into jail immediately? Did what Gomez do constitute criminal intimidation?

why was he stopped only at immigration? why does he leave almost immediately after the results? i'm sure there's more to it that couldn't be spoken about or much less reported. i don't believe that he wouldn't stay on in singapore if there was nothing here threatening to him. and when they receive news about him wanting to return to sweden... well of course they couldn't let him leave like that after all that he has said and done. o.O

he was stopped at immigration bcos they were already in for him, and were waiting for him.
PAP could not risk taking action before polling day for fear of a public backlash. So right after elections, BAM.
why does he leave immediately? um..cos he has a job.

so has he said anything that constitutes Criminal Intimidation?
Does "there will be consequences.." count?

ok la, he'll probably get off with slap on his wrist cos there is no court in hell and this lousy earth that can convict him on CRIMINAL INTIMIDATION.
