can't find the tone I want

Can try Vox AC4TV, VHT Special 6, there's a pretty decently priced Laney LC15r in the classified ads now, might want to go for that

Go for the Laney LC15r in the classifieds as mentioned.
Nothing special about the AC4tv. Frankly speaking the Pathfinder 15r is a far superior amp in terms of tone IMO (and several others).

A while back i had a discussion with pedalitis and we came to this conclusion:

Its a good choice now to might as well get a high end tube amp that you like and stick with it. (assuming of course you have the cash) rather than to slowly upgrade from a simple tube amp to an average one to the eventual one of your dreams. Reason is firstly its gonna cost you more cash in the long run to upgrade and also it can allow you to focus on practicing once your desired tone is achieved once and for all rather than having yourself continuously worrying about dialing a good tone.

I went from the Vox AC4tv to an Orange Rockerverb 50. Trust me if you've found the tone you've wanted for so long all you wanna do is make great music with that tone. :)

agree. I think its better to ' one shot ' get a good amp rather than piecemeal-ing pedals and amps and other stuffs to get the dreamtone you've been thinkin of. The prolonged trial and error and the money spend experimenting could have earlier been injected to funding the high end amp you've always wanted. Bite the bullet and go for it!

Go big. Set aside a budget of at LEAST $1k. No offense but the tone of a 15W solid state and those puny speakers are quite horrid. And frankly after playing for 5 years, limiting yourself to that only is quite astounding.

Definitely agree with him on the small amps. First things first HappyTELE, do not be bias towards tube amps, solid state amps can sound pretty badass too. I'm using a Yamaha DG60 amplifier, seriously one of the best solid state amps out there, pleasant clean sound, tons of drive options, but it's no longer in production. Furthermore, the value for it is not that high, you can probably find one here for about 300 to 400 bucks tops.

No offense, but good players can sound good with crap gear.. However, they sound great with good gear.

I understand not everyone is loaded with cash. Good tone and gear inspires playing so I don't encourage people to stick to crappy gear either. My point is even if you don't have the cash there are many cheap options on amps, effects in today's market that you can get great tone out of.

i want to get a plexi type of sound and sound that are not so thick or thin, just nice for pop rock, for dist i want it to have the clear, creamy n saturated tone... but my current gear is a line6 spider iv 30w and the built in dist is not right for me... my budget should be around 400$ and i might be getting the wampler clone pedals that j.custom recommend me... but just wonder what amp should i get... the cleans i wan sounds like crisp clean and sound bassy

I agree. To me, tone is in the fingers.... You can own a bogner XTC 20th anniversary and sound like shit if you dont work on basic techniques that affect tone and timbre, like vibrato, note choices, etc.

To me, everybody has their own definition of tone. My advice is to go try anything and everything you can and put it on your list...before deciding what to get and allocating the funds/budget to get it. Don't forget environment constraints/limitations though...quite frankly, the AC4tv is more than enough for me. I donno why some ppl on this forum are so against it but a simple change of tubes seemed to do the trick and it really has more than enough clean headroom to take pedals decently. Of course, I plan to get sth better in the near future but not while I'm still living under the same roof as my parents so that 200W full stack will have to wait. Whats the point of owning such a large amp in the bedroom when you can only turn it to like, 0.5 at most? My AC4tv's volume is usually only at 2 most of the time and its already too loud to play at night sometimes.

My $$$ worth of opinion.

get a 5 watt tube amp and a 1×12" cab. if you want a clean, one-channel amp, avoid the blackstar unless you absolutely need a series effects loop. good tube amps around 5 watts can check out blackheart and vox. it will be loud when you hit their sweet spot, but it's better than getting a 15 watter and above if you're never gonna hit their 12 o'clock at home.
