Cables and heads

just wanted to know what brand of cables and what kind, brand of heads do people here use.

was thinking of repatching my board, possibly with GL cables and some kind of neutrik heads.

and could you guys recommend some good and reasonably priced heads and cables?

mm.. theres little talk on that around other forums, dont see many people using those. have you tried their patches? im using the 20 foot one and its ok, but theres much better.

yeah im using the MIC ones but they seem pretty unreliable, sometimes losing the connection between the pedals, sometimes they come out too easy also. and they're pretty hard to grab hold of to disconnect from the jack.

Don't bother with GLs unless you intend to solder them. Due to that... gimick.. of solderless joints, you introduce unreliability into your setup. Crackling, poor connections, loss of tone, all happen...

For cables, its really a lot to do with the soldering work done on it. Do it right, clean, strong joint - you are set.

Look up lavaman's website. A good guide to cables and their respective properties, pros & cons listed. Very good read.

heh, actually george L is quite ok lah. Been round 4 years since i gotten it. Till now, most still surviving even though no soldering and i dont really take care of it. Usually it be twisted outta shape and anyhow thrown round...

Funny thing is the one time that george L fail me is due to lousy soldering after i solder the cable to some cheapo china made plug. And the thing is, a $1.80 china made plug compared to neutrik plug and a georgeL solderless plug, doesnt make any difference to sound at all other than paying too much and feeling good...

anyway, a trip to simlim tower or simlim square 3rd floor, can get all the stuff necesssary...

eh? Then good for you pathein... Daniel Sassoon had his entire board rewired and got rid of the G Ls because they were just so intermittent and crackly... Malcolm's G Ls aren't holding up too...

One of the reasons for getting the more expensive plugs is for quality's sake, as in, they don't oxidise as fast... usually lar.

And you know ah, I bought pre-made cables that came with "neutrik" heads and guess what? Turned out to be some... MIC neutrik-lookalikes. Did they suck or what? Nope, but its a matter of principle lah. Say neutrik then sell neutrik not Ream or some funny brand.... and still charge the same pricing.

i dont think i can buy from lavaman.. dont have any paypal or any method of buying online.

so shred, what cables and jacks/heads are you using?

anyone uses the ibanez noiseless patches?

im using those in my board. although they are pretty cumbersome but reliable. tone lost in not a problem and there is no crackling at all.
of course as the name suggest. its noiseless.

sweelee brings them in.

GLs cables and heads are really good and reliable. I believe the reason why some peeps out there get crackly cables are because some shops don't have a proper system in managing their roll of cables. I know of many great shops out there that don't take care of their entire roll of GLs cables by not cutting the ends properly, which allows the cable ends to be worn out faster and oxygen to enter the roll. (I shan't mention the shops here)

I've read in threads that GL cables can actually restore tone loss in your pedal line. I tried it personally by only introducing 1 GL cable into my whole line of effects and trust me on this, IT ACTUALLY WORKS! Passed the same GL cable to a few of my friends and they too find that there's more tone in the line after introducing that 1 cable at the end of the line. The rest of my patch cables, I'm using Canare GS-6 with neutrik heads from Mr Misse.

My suggestion here is this, if you can afford it. get GL for your whole setup. The quality is of a different world. Cost $2 per ft and $7 per head at Ebenex. (Should be the correct pricing) Otherwise, take the poor man's method like me and use cheaper, but still good patch cables like Canare, available at Luther or Mr Misse with neutrik heads, then use 1 GL patch at the end of your entire setup, or after the pedal that sucks the most tone. Trust me, there really is a big difference.

Cheers Guys

I tried GLs however didnt really like the tone it produce.. currently my board i wired up by misse flat head canares and i love the tone, however it doesnt seem reliable to me.. I will be re wiring my board with canare and G&H plugs from http://reddotmusic.wordpress.com and we will see how it goes :D

I got a GL free from buyin a guitar, found it to be unreliable too, there was intermittent lost of signal, think they are a hit and miss. Planet Waves is still the best for me, more reliable.

Leb : hmm those G&H plugs look quite good. where's this place located at? might go for the 3.90 plugs together with GL cables.

David/ebenex : could beez do a solder job for me with GLs if i get these heads?
