if you ppl have advice on what other keyboards i should get and what i should look out for. even better!

im gettting the keyboard for a bandmate. our band plays punk/rock/pop music

how about new ones? someone pls help me out!

all the places i called said their range is like 1k.

citymusic/swee lee/yahama

would the psr 500 be adaquate?

niteblade, your question on what is a synthesizer is answered in the second sticky in the keyboard section of the forum. Have you read through the 2 stickies?

You said you are getting it for a bandmate - which I presumed you are getting it for your band's keyboardist. Well, my suggestion is to ask your keyboardist to select the keyboard himself/herself. It will be a big mistake to get one for your keyboardist without his/her input.

For the range you are asking for, you can never get a new synth. Bongman's suggestion is a good choice. At that range, you'll be getting the PSR, which may not be what your keyboardist want.

there is no synth u can buy at 300-400 ..

m1 is what u'll get if u have tat budget ...

VINTAGE!! woohoo .. bongman .. hehehe =)

PSR series may be good if you are going to play for children music like Hi5... Your keyboardist may not be happy with that...as the key feel on PSR is not cooperative enough for live playing (IMHO)...also PSR has only touch sensitive and no after touch...

Considering this....ask your keyboardist to share some money to buy a better synth..look for Tritons or Rolands like XP series...or old kurzweil.... :D

one two three four!! Hi-FIVE!!!!!

=P

..... ask ur keyboardist to buy his/her own laa ....
i've seen too many band buying keys for keyboardist, maybe it's sweet at first ... but then i think the keyboardist won't appreciate the keyboard as much as if it's theirs ....

=)

GET SOME SYNTH!! GET SOME!!!

joel, to rephrase what you said, PSR series in the $300-400 will be good for music like Hi5. Higher end PSR series is no toy (PSR1500, PSR 3000 etc). As for after-touch, they are not used as often as other controllers like mod wheel and pitch bend (again depending on music). I would put after-touch lowest priority.

But then, a PSR will always be a PSR - an arranger. Arranger keyboards for a band is unusual. Arranger keyboards for a one-man band - absolutely.

ha ha ha cheez....

I tried my friend's PSR 2100..still the same sticky plastic keys...no after touch.... :D :D

May be higher end PSR's like 5000, 8000 may be better ?? Even Tyros keys sucks... :D  8O

Joel, it's not about the keys. Arranger keyboards will always be arranger keyboards. The keys will always be like that - plastic. It's the sound and other functions. I believe PSR 2100 is lower end than the PSR 1500. Don't be fooled by the numbers.

The higher end PSR and the Tyros are no toy. I mean, the Tyros 2 cost $5000-6000, the price range of a high end workstations and more expensive than most synthesizers/keyboards. You cannot compare arranger keyboards and synths as they are of different categories.

Of course, in a band, there's no point having an arranger keyboard. But my point about after-touch stays. How often does one use after-touch? Even if a keyboard doesn't have it, I would use other cc control (mod wheel, expression pedal etc) to get the same effect.

ooh i think i get the drift about the arranger and synthesiser (its really hard to pronouce quickly -.-)

hahah seems like the mm6 is the cheapest synthesiser ive seen so far. 900 bucks

thanks for the replies guys. my first time entering this part of soft. you guys are real friendly. i think i should read up and find out more/ talk to my keyboardist before i make any purchase
