Buying Bass...

Yoz. I'm interested in buying a new bass. I already got the bass in mind but I don't know why, recently Davis having trouble with the shipment of the bass that I want. It's LTD F-254 btw. Anyway, maybe a brief introduction of what I'm playing could help you guys help me suggest another bass?

Aight, I'm playing heavy to death metal. Planning to tune my bass to C(yup, those black-death metal tuning). As long as the sound is heavy enough, and the shape isn't too awkward(eg: LTD Viper) can do. My budget is below 1k. Pretty big huh. So yeah... Can anyone suggest me other bass other than the F-254 for this kind of music? The suggestion will greatly appreciate. ^_^

hi bro 8)

to put it broadly, any bass will fit the bill, no doubt that there are some features that'll help you propagate your playing style/ tonal preferences. it seems that laypersons tend to associate a certain brand name to a certain genre of music which is too limiting IMO. if that's the rule of thumb, i don't see why BWar (Marduk, black metal, pic below) plays a Rickenbecker... keep an open mind, get something which makes you play well.

Hello Wan ;) ,

Just a suggestion, if uyou're out for a more solid tone, I advise you go for active basses, those with active electronics. Some of those basses handle drop tunings especially well. Theres the oomph to it :D . Yeah. Good luck in your quest for an new axe.

Hmmm yeah. The feel and 'x-factor' of a bass is important cos you're parting cash with it, and gonan spend time with your new 'wife'. I guess you must go out and try different models, and see which bass blows you away. Looking at specs can only do so much. Actually trying I believe, does so much more.

try all the basses u can find. neck comfort, pups placements(so ur thumb can rest), etc..

if u wanna be specific abt model n brands, nobody shud tell you. u gotta try for urself. tune it to c at the shop n hear how it sound..

i guess for ur kinda music, the pups must be quite gd.. maybe u can consider a decent bass, then change the pups.. or u can get a really gd bass.

hey ho let`s go!!!!!!

i agree with 3NotesAbar......any bass will do..as long u`re comfortable with it....u can use Sheehan`s Attitude...but if u can`t handle it..or even get the sound that u want...then y buy it,right??

i use a good-good,cheap-cheap one...Ibanez GSR200 Soundgear......just nice....

unlike 3NotesABar aka kelvin aka GURU...he got loads of basses at home......  .....hehehehheehehehehehehehe......

GOD I LOVE UR KUBITI!!!!!!!!!!

on a random note, does anyone know where to get a fender aerodyne bass? And does it come in another colour than black?

More importantly... how does it sound? a j-bass and p-bass mixed pups... pretty tempting

Alright! Thanks for the suggestion guys! There's one more think that have been bugging me. It's regarding the detuning.

Like for example the bass is set for standard tuning initially, but when I want to detune it lower(like C for example), do I need to adjust the bridge too? Like the height of that... I don't know what it's call, but it's at the bridge there. Haha...

Anyway, can tuned the bass I'm testing at the shop to C meh?? Haha, I scared later the shop owner scold...

Dey... you eat chili ah? Why? You suddenly feel hot is it?
huahuahuahua.......
*sorry, cannot help it*

Detuning is more of a personalization. You can play in standard while testing. Chances are, if your ears tell you theres a crunch in the low end of the sound, it'll roar at dropped tunings. No need to detune at the shop lol. What I know is, if you drop tune, you must adjust the truss rod (neck) to accomodate the new tension of the strings, or use thicker gauges (drop tune = decrease string tension = decreased pressure put on neck, thus need to readjust to accomodate) .

I see. I guess I can ask the shop owner to like adjust it for me once I bought the bass then. Alright, thanks everyone for the suggestion and comments. Greatly appreciated...

dun wanna assume, but can't help it but to feel the heat here, hehe..can oso say pattituci's trb, or marcus miller's jazz bass or flea's modulus wat..dunno wats his agenda, tho, hmm...

aniway, still learning the bass trade, n will not stop learning.

Abit off topic here but...here goes

I think its cool to own a few very different basses. Best if the scenario is like 4 string (P bass, Musicman, J bass), 5 string fretted and fretless, 6 string fretted, Electric Upright or EUBs as they are called often, upright bass, and chapman stick! Then can learn to be like Tony Levin or John Pattititumici. Any idea how versatile Mr.Levin is?? Its insane.

But for most (normal) people, I think its good to just have like 3 diverse types of basses, and keep learning from different areas of music. Having one bass and one sound is like saying:"ok...This is IT. I'm there and done." or "Like it o r not, this what i do". For me, its pretty boring la, and hard to think differently on the same instrument. Everytime i pick up a fretless, i stop playing pentatonic scales. Simply amazing.[/b]
