Buy/Sell ethics

hi...

i was wondering if you hav encounter this.. if not... do u tink these actions are appropriate??

i recently had two deals with people.... we agreed for the deal... and set place and time to deal...

however... a few days before the deal... the person smsed to say that they found a better deal and called off the deal...

i dun tink that confirming a deal... den cancel it off when one finds a better deal is a responsible way to handle buy and sell..

do you tink so too??

Nope. I disagree. That's how the 2nd-hand market goes. Putting aside the condition difference, it all depends on who is more desperate to let their stuff go. At least the buyer informed you that he is not buying your stuff. What if the buyer just kept quiet? Wouldn't that have made you even more pissed?

Anyways, we all are out seeking a better deal aren't we? A penny saved is a penny earned I'd say.

You could have tried to asked him how much better the deal was. You could have tried to match it or go a bit lower.....

as in confirm deal liao den call off... at least the buyer can make it clear that if there's a better deal... he will call it off.. and not do it after he confirms it...

I agree with Oqh92. Such behaviour shows is indeed inappropriate.

Yes, we all are out for the best deal. If so, make it known when you post a buy/sell ad that it is an auction and that you will deal with the highest bidder.

If you post an item to sell at a certain price and you have agreed to deal with a person. Don't turn around and cancel the deal just because another person offers you slightly more. Your word will not mean anything. What saddens me is that people don't even realise that such actions show a blantant lack of integrity on the part of the seller.

yes... i told my buyer that this is very irresponsible... wats the reply..

no... i am not sorry...

i was so furious then... and sorry for the typo

Remember that buyer is not obligated to buy and seller is not obligated to sell. They both can just blacklist each other when things don't go their way and then start whining on the forums.

If not happy with buyers, go sell to cash converter. If not happy with sellers, go buy 1st hand.

No, the buyers & seller are not obligated to buy from / sell to each other.

Fact is if you have already come to an agreement and set a date/time to deal, then you have both verbally agreed to the deal. To call it off is basically to tell the other person that my word doesn't hold any weight. That's what I call a lack of integrity.

yes i wholeheartedly agree with ogh and 5string. when u agree to buy something its actually a verbal contract or not dun agree in the first place. i have my fair share of dealin with dis type. all these just goes to show what 'honour' n 'integrity' they have!!

Intergrity and Responsibilty holds very little weight in this current generation anyways. If you don't want to get ur panties ruffled by a bad deal, be firm and don't always hang on to one seller/buyer. Go for the one you can sell/buy at the quickest time. Don't do reservation.

I dislike sellers who keep waiting for a higher offer even when their asking price is met with the offer of buying it the earliest convient day for them. Any seller who gives more then 2 days waiting time, then buyer is not to be held responsible for finding another seller to obtain item at a faster time while still holding on to the previous deal just in case.

I also dislike buyers who keeps delaying purchase time, ask to reserve or gives more then 2 days to purchase. Seller should not be held responsible to offload item to the next quickest buyer.

There is no excuse to delay the deal in any way. You snooze, you lose. If you get to sell/buy it even after all the wait, then lucky you. There is no put intergrity or responsibility or whatever into the equation.

As for lowballers, lets not talk abt them. They are another species altogether.

integrity and responsibility still holds in our current society... not holding any weight in the current societl just means that there are problems in the society... and we shud search for a way to solve it and not to accept it... as if society does not have integrity and responsibilty.. how is it going to survive and work??

what is done is done.time to make a better a deal and not complain about people.if its a good deal one wont resist to jump to another.

but the fault is divided.one not to tell before hand of a unmentioned closed deal and a deal that isnt satisfying for anyone to bite.

just my opinion.

Although I was being vague, I was only refering to the buyer/seller market in general. Not just musical instruments. It includes shops as well.

Although I wasn't refering to it society-wise, I do see intergrity and responsibilty becoming lax. The values are still there but its dwindling and we see cases for the lack of exercising the values or part thereof in the papers and news everyday.

Intergrity and responsible is important no doubt about it but we just have to expect getting none. Have a contingency plan. Be prepared. For its a dog eat dog world. We can't expect to have everything going our way.

Anyways, sorry to have strayed out of topic. Let us return and stay within the buyer/seller ethics topic.

Since the topic was about buy/sell ethics, I was refering justly. And I do meant this generation in regards to the buy/sell ethics. I didn't know that buy/sell ethics inludes society-wise ethics as well.

Although I strayed to included everything else, I wasn't the 1st to include it in.

Whereas for the army and police, we all have read the cases that have happened. No need to state it down here and going further away from topic.

well imho i think it is relative. since most of us have been at one time in the police or army or even now doing their ns. to be honourable in your dealings and have integrity in whatever u do is part of basic human ethics. if u dun even have that when dealing with a small matter how u gonna deal in a 'dog eat dog world'. no preaching here ...jus my 2 sen worth...

A deal is a deal.. An agreement that should be honoured, not defiled at the last moment..

Biggest screw-ups:
I am reaching the destination, buyer calls, saying that he just did a read-up, and it is not what he wanted.. He thought it was a looper, when it was stated clearly it was a delay..
Buyer tells me he doesn't want it after I rejected 5 other potential buyers, seeing he reserved it first..
Buyer agrees on a price, and uses the idea of the pedal "rusting" as very 'jia lat', and bargains.. I feel this is bullshit, since half my pedals are vintage ones that are in bad condition (I prefer this), but sounds perfect.. Just take a look at the really high end pedals.. They don't look professional (eg. BJF, Landgraff, Klon).. But they sound 10 times better than they look..
Supposed to trade a pedal.. Buyer gets engaged the day before.. In the morning told me he will contact me.. Never spoke to me again..

Funniest thing was when I met the seller and it turned out to be a bro.. He gave me a sweet discount on the spot, which was more than what I bargained for!

Unfortunately for me.. I am the kind of seller that tries his best to fulfill a buyer's wish.. I try to deal at City Hall, seeing that I stay in the East and school in the North, and I do have a 2 day return policy.. Some of my deals I have given on the spot discounts.. But I DO NOT ENTERTAIN on the spot lowball.. I'll just walk away rudely, seeing they did not show any respect.. I just don't like it when you show some respect, and some form of friendship for fellow musicians, and they walk all over you as if you have no dignity..

i encounter before, but this, don't know if it's better or worst. this guy wanted to buy a bass for his son, so he came to my house to test the bass, everythings is in order. he bought it. then soon, he messaged me. saying i'm a dishonest seller as the pickups are not working and all kind of nonsense. so i ask'd him to bring it back, i check for him. he brought it back and i tested. the pick ups are working PERFECTLY. we played a little tug of war and he finally said his son don't like the design and he wants a refund.
