Vios 6988/6998 w/450W PSU + 1 Fan Casing<--- Avoid! few of my customers mainboard spoil because of their PSU. try i-Cute, Coolermaster etc..

Just helping Vicky here...

Fuwell, Intel System - for $939.

Intel® Core™2 Duo processors
E8400 3.0GHz 1333MHz 6MB

DFI Blood Iron P35-T2RL Mainboard w/Raid/Gigabit Lan/Sound
Kingston PC2-5300 DDR2 667 2GB Ram
XpertVision 8600GT 256MB PCI-E Graphic
Hitachi 250GB SATA2 Harddisk
CoolerMaster Centurion 5 Casing
CoolerMaster Extreme 460W PSU
Samsung S203B 20X SATA DvD-Writer
Microsoft Wired Desktop 500 (K/B + Mouse)

Suppose can be cheaper without the Wired Desktop. And a simpler casing, the cooler master prob quite exp. I would recommend mine, large fans at slow speeds, pretty quiet. Antec.
any thots on the above config anyone?

oh and i have a habit of leaving my comp on 24/7, because ppl often talk to me like any time of the day.
and my current comp hasnt exploded so i need smth to match this feat.
:P

thanks guys

vicko,
3rd party coolers and more case fans are for usually for overclockers, modders and super kiasu people.

Your selection is not too bad. But I'd go for 9600GT rather than the 8800GT. The performance is only very slightly inferior, but the price is almost $100 lesser. Now I think the 9600GT is at $199. It also runs much cooler than 8800GT ;)

24/7 operations depend a lot on your room ventilation and temperature as well, i guess. If you can do it now, most probably you can do it with a new rig. The new Intel chips and the 9600GT are both pretty cool, so it shouldn't be a problem. If you can 24/7 on the P4, chances are you can 24/7 on anything.

Actually I would suggest that since you are not really into tweaking the clock speed etc, why not save up a little and get intel's motherboard. it's super stable and cheaper.

By the way, Fuwell is not necessarily the cheapest store in Sim Lim.. What I did was that I walk around to shops and ask them to offer me a spec that best suit my usage, and they will advise your accordingly. In the end I got myself a quadcore 2.0GB system, with intel motherboard, 2 GB ram, and GE8800 GT for $700 I think. I got my own XP pro so I safe on that. It's a good bargain even till now. At different time, different shops might have their own promotion. Just listen to what they have to offer, and get out of the shop and think about it.. or go other shop and ask for quotation again.

I din't really read all the post in this thread, but in case no one answer.. actually if you know how to take out your harddisk and bring it to Sim Lim, they will put your hard drive either as your secondary (slave) drive, or u might not need to get another hard disk as welll.. just reuse the hard disk and reinstall the drivers for your motherboard and other devices, Your new pc will be up and running.. This way, u can safe up on your Win XP professional as well. Also, u might wanna look into using back your DVD/CD drive. Just a thought from me.. =)

thanks for your input (:

but i think i gotta bring the whole cpu there cos i dont wanna accidentally screw up my hard disk ><

and uh i dont have the disc for my windows xp so that means i gotta buy it again :(

how much is it now?

thanks again!!

Vicki, the CPU is the little flat square metal piece that does the processing - it sits under a cooler and fan on your motherboard in the computer casing. When you say you are going to bring your "CPU", you should be saying you are bringing the case.

But that's OK, we understand you. :)

haha yeah i just found that out after doing research.
sorry i'm so used to it.
you know that big chunky rectangular box is a cpu?

sorry, butheh at least you guys get what i mean. (:

jolly good. might be there myself tomorrow. RAM so cheap nowsadays. think will change to the 6400/800 ram chips. am still at 5300/667!! hehe.

You can't go wrong with Fuwell and Bell Systems. However, remember not to pay the full amount before they set up for you. Most problematic of all is the motherboard, and in some cases the capacitors may be factory-defective so if you'd paid in full before they set it all up, they'd recommend you to "buy a better mobo" because there's no more stock for the one that's at fault.

DDR-800 RAMs are of no use if you don't overclock, they will be clocked down. With the latest FSB ratings of Intel at 1333, only DDR-667 makes sense. No problem of leaving things on 24/7, not that much of power consumption. You're looking at a maximum estimated figure of $80+- monthly with _good_ 800W PSUs. We had a long discussion on power consumption and calculation a year or two ago at HardwareZone but I can't find the thread.

Anyway this can be helpful in case you didn't already make your purchase:

to thread started there is xpsp4 already.. anyways if ur not in anyways it related has in know anything abt the system go find someone liek one of your friend who is trusted in setting up your choices finding the right parts u also should base down your budget, what ur looking for like how much ram u want whats ur use for it yeah its cheap but if ur not smart into this kind of stuffs dont do it... making your own computer is dangerous if u dont know nuts abt it what if its crashed u aint got brains to figure what out and end up calling a technician wasting cash or friend wasting time... lol i got aint no problem with vista yaya
everyone says it sucks with no valid reasons yeah true a few games not compatible thats why theres the vista sp1 and its not true that its not compatible because if your smart know how to tweak the system u can make it work or a update from the gamesite itself 100%workable on most games i know if a game doesnt work on vista u can contact me..
dont know why ppl hate vista is the 2nd most secure os i know no one can beat linux trust me

HideX, you mean XP SP3. There's no SP4 :).

And yes, Vista is not that bad. My IT friends find it pretty stable - if you don't install all kinds of things in it. It is slower than XP but boot up is apparently faster. It's not that terrible that one should avoid like the plague. The only argument we have against Vista is in DAW situations - when we need maximum resources (CPU, RAM and HD) all funneled towards DAW software and plugins and not wasted in system resources. Most drivers incompatibility issues are more or less resolved. A few DAW hardware are stiill trying to get into Vista (eg Sonic Core, previously Creamware - should be Vista ready soon).

And furthermore, there are rumours (from very reliable sources) that Microsoft is ditching Vista because of all the problems it has. Windows 7 is coming up pretty soon (maybe as early as next year) before Bill Gates steps down. Vista may be another Windows ME. Many DAW users are holding on to XP until Windows 7 comes up to see if it's more stable than Vista.

The problem with Vista is not stability, it's speed. SP1 did some good, but Vista is still very slow compared with XP SP2/3. It also costs more than XP.
There is little incentive for existing XP users to upgrade to Vista.

Even if you're buying a new computer, it's also worth considering between the 2.
Vista obviously has more eye-candy, and supports the latest DX10. But XP is cheaper and faster.

True, Vista is actually pretty stable. Only reason I guess to upgrade from XP to Vista is when going 64-bit and in a DAW environment. For some reason, some DAW software (like Sonar 7 PE) only support Vista 64-bit and not XP x64.

But for general use, really there's no point to upgrade. Totally agree. Esp when Windows 7 is just round the corner.

visually to say 64bit is still better
it doesnt run that slow too just get a decent computer to run on vista there wont be problems too bad microsoft chose not to writethe format of vista in java would be alot faster for those who have used java programs or made them u should know...
64bit is still far better than xp visually +theres this new software in vista to produce better images/screen so i would recommend vista compared to xp has it is also secure but not has secure has linux has we all know here main issues are long term use if im not wrong well
1 thing u know shld be the running faster than xp yes it does run slower but not so slow
its still very fast but comppared to xp its abit slower what i would recommend in vista would be vista home premium or basic just to get the 64bit enviroment other add-ons would be crap to u.. LOL

HideX_X,
You seem to be confusing [64bit vs 32bit] and [XP vs Vista]. It sounds pretty weird to say 64bit is visually better than XP.

Java is currently actually slower than C/C++. I thought this is a well-known fact?
Also, it is impossible to really write Vista in Java. How is the JVM gonna run? You mean the entire Windows kernel will run on a JVM? Then, what is the JVM gonna run on?
