Budget, Entry-level Drum Mic-ing

Hi all,

I'm planning to mic up my drum for simple bedroom recording, nothing at professional level but of decent quality, and I have a pretty low budget to consider.

Talking about quality, I will be expecting noise myself as I'm going to use my onboard soundcard, worrying about an external soundcard later.

I'm currently looking at getting the Wharfadale KMD-7 ($330 @ Citymusic) for the mics and Yamaha MG102c($195 @ Luther) as the mixer.

I understand that the MG102c only has 4mic preamp. I'm thinking of using mic combiners (2 XLR (mics) to 1 XLR (mixer)). And my setup will be as such:

KMD-7
-KM-3 (x2) as overhead mic > 2 to 1 port
-KM-4 as bass mic > 1 port
-KM-5 (x4) as snare/tom mic > 2 to 1 port (x2)

Question: How will such a setup affect my recording for my level?

Thanks in advanced!

you can try anything you like , though after you have achieved all these you'd kinda be kicking yourself thinking you might as well save another $200 onwards +/- for a proper multitrack audio interface to settle all your audio interface issues + your multitrack mixing inputs + your phantom power issues + time wasted figuring things out, when time working a part time job no brainer purchase.

http://www.citymusic.com.sg/webshaper/store/viewProd.asp?pkProductItem=261 there's a promotion now.

or something like Line6 UX8.

think of recording like "you like music, you picked up the guitar .. so after you learned to play guitar, you wanna play+sing at the same time.. after that you wanna shred... after that you wanna form your own band.." it's a progression. you might as well jump straight into "play+sing".

Haha,
Thanks Ron for your input again. I appreciate it.
I understand about the time part, but what can an NSF do on his off days?

I WILL consider the R16. It looks bad-ass for the price.

heh, c'mon man. you're talking to the last batch of recruits who drew $270/month allowance. i lived in the east. my camp was in sembawang,I PLEADED them to volunteer guard duty to save money on food and lodging every dollar counts. I don't smoke,drink,whore,gamble.if your relation with your parents is not a quarter as bad as mine, you should be able to take a measly loan of additional $200. then get the audio interface first. R16 comes with its own 2 onboard mics to start with.

here's the answer to your question : "what can an NSF do on his off days?" > don't spend money. stay home, don't communicate with anyone , save on your phone bills. dump your girlfriend (well, thats what I did, i'm a heartless alphamale mcp bastard).

gd luck

btw , me (i demonstrated in the Mix This), nicksmusicbox, sallys production , musiccameraaction , and a few other friends of mine are all using Zoom R16. it doesn't just "look bad ass" , it is.

Hahaha, okay. Looks like its the KMD-7 and R16 then. I'll taken a better look at it on the company site itself.

Anyways, the off day part, I AM saving money. (after all I can't really find/work any part-time jobs except tuition if i can find any)

MG102 = $200
R16 = $465

The R16 would be a more suitable equipment for your usage. It can record 8 microphone to 8 discreet tracks. It is also a USB audio interface, you will get cleaner recordings.

the old school way we call it "no money sell backside". no need to get defensive if you're already making effort to save , your conscience is clear hehe.

$465 - $200 = $265 , what you're paying for in this $265 will solve all the headaches you will face based on http://tinyurl.com/diyrecording , comes with 2 mics hehe and a DI box and onboard cabinet simulation + great testimonial/endorsement and video demonstration haha.

wait for your next NSF allowance loh. few more days right.

Yeah, allowance coming a few days time, but the R16 have to wait though. I got other stuff to damage my wallet first.
At least I'm clear where I'm heading now. Heh heh.
Thanks a lot Ron, been a greeeeeat help.
James too for the little input but definitely helps me deciding it. :D
