Hi there guys. I got something to enquire on. Can i use Boss CS-3, a compression sustainer for my bass guitar? I always have problem of making my bass sound to sustain. So i thought of using it but is it relevant? Please help me in these. Or if you guys got any other better gadgets to sustain my bass sound? thanks in advance guys.

Here is the link if you guys are figuring what gadget i'm talking about.
BOSS CS-3 Compression Sustainer :: Overview

compressors normally do not distinguish between guitar and bass signals

what compressors do is even out the dynamics of the bass output signal, or something like that, my use of technical jargon is horrible at best. for example, when slapping, or when playing harmonics

there are some threads on compressors on these forums you can search for, because they are too complicated to explain (and repeat) in detail

with regards to sustain, i feel that best results come when you mod the bass itself. bridge, nut, saddles, etc. you might want to check out things like badass, gotoh, tusq etc. some of these fixes are rather inexpensive

hmm good infos bro. Thx alot though. looks like i still got a lot to learn about bass. And looks like i have to work more lorr.. haha! thanks anyway.

hmm i've used this particular compression sustainer while playing bass before, like it when i suddenly wanted to do some thumbing and slapping, did not have to worry about volume control. however when everyone in the band was playing together, the bass sound tended to get drowned out, due to the compression.

i'd go with the suggestion of modding the pups or using preamps rather than a sustainer for bass. :)

it works just fine for me.
but mine's a modded version specially for bass.
it's less noisy and stuffs.

maybe you could give it a try and stuffs to see if you like it.

oh yea btw, my settings for the compressor is:
level : 12o clock
tone: 10o clock
attack: 2o clock
sustain 3-4o clock

it's good for picking cause i pick like all the time and it maintains the volume of my strokes.
not sure about the other techniques though.

hope that helps in someway or another. (:

oh ya, swee lee was selling their Boss pedals at 40% off at their clearance sale last Sat. for the CS-3 that would be a little above $100.
