Boarding an airplane with a guitar -- is it possible?

Looks like it's for American airports, but as you said, it could be handy in certain situation. Thank you very much. :D

Friend carried his Musicman Stingray back in a hardcase with no problems; he just had it checked into the fragile section.

yup i did this recently, theres a metal cage specially for fragile items. no damage to my RG whatsoever, but then again i go to pretty extreme lengths when packing it. full bubble wrap around the neck and body inside the hardcase, making sure it doesnt move an inch. no detuning or truss rod adjustments either, but remember to not open the case immediately after getting to your destination, let the humidity/temperatures equalize overnight at least. i've heard of people using duct tape to seal the edges of the hardcase but i couldnt really be bothered. my guitar was still in tune when i opened it up.

maybe i'm just less risk averse than you guys, but I've always just packed the guit well in the case and stuck a fragile sticker on it and sent it thru with normal baggage. I've done this with my electrics (Tele, EBMM, Washburn SE29), acoustic (Maton Custom) and bass (Yamaha 5 string). The Yamaha was even in a soft case and we went via China Air!!

I've never had a problem, and have travelled with my guits regularly. As long as they are in a good flight case and are well packed inside (ie with lots of padding so that they don't move around, but still have enough bubble wrap or rubber foam to cushion the blows), I think it's generally ok.

Mind you, having said that, there have been times when we've travelled and equipment has arrived damaged. Our EQ and vocal processor were damaged in its flight case between here and Shanghai once, but I think these flight cases don't have much "give" when they are dropped.

I actually DO loosen the tension on my strings before checking them in. Dunno... just in case. It's just one less thing to go wrong.

1. Under the "rules" anything larger than the 1'x2' carry on size should not be allowed in the cabin. If you got on then you were lucky.

2. under the "rules" 99% of airlines will not insure string instuments (usually violins and cellos, etc) but guitars (electric or acoustic) fall into this definition. If they apply the "rules", you will need to sign an indemnity saying that you understand that they are not liable for damages.

3. If you checked-in your guitar and it comes out in 1 piece, you are lucky. The only true protection is to use an ATA approved case (and still not a guaranatee. A real ATA case costs more than a any Applause guitar I've seen. 99% of cases supplied by dealers/manufacturers are not ATA approved.

3. You were able to get any compensation for damages, again you were lucky, not because you were entitled.

I wish you luck.

As for the tax. Point is they won't know, esp if you don't look like you've just got back from a holiday. As far as I know SG customs are not really anal about these things, esp on inbound flights that are degsinated to the "nothing to declare" green lane by default.

I'm assuming you're talking about bringing in an instrument with you on a plane and not buying it from overseas and having it shipped to you. If so, GST applies.

haha sort of becuz i went to hong kong recently, and i saw a guitar i wanted to buy, but my parents decided not as they tot SG customs might charge tax...

I guess you might get taxed if you're unlucky, but I don't think they'd bother. It's probably gonna be just for GST unless there's some kind of special tax I don't know about.

Can't be any worse than dodgy Malaysian customs. :x "Special tax"

so it is safe to brin a guitar overseas or from overseas?cos i scared that the sg customs will not let me board the plane or the neck will snap.
