Best Asian Guitarist

Dunno if he's well-known here..but I think it's Tak Matsumoto of B'z. He's supposedly the best guitarist in Japan, (first non-Anglo-American to have a signature model Gibson and the fifth person ever to have a signature model Les Paul).

If I am not wrong, Paul Gilbert jammed with him for some time when he was in Japan.

Another chinese dude, called Powell Young (He westernized his name to appeal to weatern audiences) has his own endorsed EB Music man guitars. Highly rated by Joe Satriani.

lol. i bet jeifen havent see anchang from sexmachineguns, guitarist from seikimaII, guitarist from Onmyouza and the well known....

AKIRA TAKASAKI from Loudness. :)

There are many great guitarists in Asia not only in Japan.. Just that Japan has a huge music market thus its more or less rather justifiable that the big guitar companies take notice of them.. Its quite a pity though that the great guitarist from other asian countries dont get much recognition...

heh yeah thats true...exposure to all kinds of music is important.

Personally I feel theres no best of anything in music.. U can be a master of the instrument but not the best at it... Diverse listening to the diff genres of music is definately a gd thing...

IMHO, both Malmsteen and Angelo suffers from the same problems...they are damn fast, but suffer from too much artistic myopia. Same formula everywhere.

As for Mike Portnoy, I dare say, he's a DAMN fine drummer, and DEFINITELY more so than Yoshiki. Though, there is really no basis to compare their musical talent...although you CAN say, Yoshiki was more successful as Dream Theatre has never hit mainstream.

But wait till you hear Denis Chambers on drums.... that guy can make a standard drum kit set sound like Mike Portnoy's "fortress" of drums. He's the man Sheehan calls "the human metronome".

Check out Niacin's albums. Fusion Jazz, very very cool.

haha. theres no way to compare musicians la. all r gd. esp mike angelo n malmsteen. portnoy or yoshiki. maksim or rudess. at least they r gd enuf to make a name for themselves. :D

maksim or rudess. at least they r gd enuf to make a name for themselves

maksim's average....there are tons of classical pianists out there who play better than him..just that they dun have a super promotion team behind them...it's all the marketing

hey, thats life.

They are selling an image...it doesn't matter as long as they sell records.

It's never the actual 'value' of their music, but the 'percieved value'

so sad that singapore itself has a small market...look at ppl like talib or dhalif...or even justin from allmusic...how well known r they...there should be at least some major promotion for bands or solo artists...

Since this is an Asian Best guitarists thread, I'll list out mine. Basically I'll list down those guitarists that I know of. Be it local and within the Asian region. There's no need to go beyond that.

1) Man Kidal
2) Samad (He came out with an album that feature Paul Gilberrt as his guest)
3) Adnan (M.Nasir's fav sessionist)
4) Borhanuddin (Fractured Skull/Manifest/Urbankarma)
5) Talib (Tri-ryche/Tribe)
6) Royhan (Tri-ryche)
7) Akira Takasaki(Loudness)

IMO these are the ppl that I've known in the music scene that rules in their own genre.. If u got ur comments, please add...

think those jap dudes from B'z are quite powerful too.

Anyone familiar with Chinese rockers (China, Taiwan, HK..)? I was always interested in what they had to offer... but very very little exposure here.

There's this guy I saw on guitaryou.com tak-ho from hong kong, well, he's not exactly famous or anything, but he's dam talented... plays PG, DT, Yngwie, Rusty and all those stuff.... and if he's a relative unknown, i wonder what the famous dudes there have to offer...

ermmm.. seriously.. i think the rift between the two is huge. maksim definitely pales in comparison to rudess. heh.

edit : anyone mentioned Herman Li from Dragonforce? albeit from hk. but still a guitarist with great runs and chops.

Tak Matsumoto is really good. If you're in interested in Ultraman, Tak Matsumoto Group (TMG) is doing NEVER GOOD-BYE, the theme song for next year's ULTRAMAN: THE NEXT movie.

And the RIDER CHIPS' guitarist is good too. hey are a 3-man band doing remakes of traditional Kamen Rider (Japan's original Masked Rider) and the recent Kamen Rider songs. If any of you see Masked Rider Ryuki on Chn I everyday at 6pm, most of the songs are played by RIDER CHIPS.

ANIMETAL is also a good band. they do metal covers of Anime songs. their guitarists are also very proficient.

quoting sLapshock, Onmyouza's guitarist is also one of the good ones. Houyoku Tenshou has a very fast but melodic guitar solo.

Man Kidal of Lefthanded is freaking good, malaysians just rock so much. Powell young, what a joke. someone who changes his own name to get richer is not someone respectable. And i think Young sounds stupider than Yang. So this powell guy must be really screwed. Couldnt he name himself Fast finger chang or something so he can further "appeal" to the western world?
