Bassplayers Dont know music theory

i just stumbled upon this thread and after readin everything i have to say my 1 cent worth.

Music theory makes a better musician, be it if your a bassist or keys player or guitarist. But there is a difference between knowing theory and knowing how to apply it properly. simple example can be a good musician only needs to use one scale and think out of the box on it to come up with a good solo. lets say u only know your major scale. well thats all u need to solo over simple songs cause if u look at it most of the other major scales are built off it like lydian and mixolydian which are actually the modes of major scale and you dont have much key changes in most simple songs cause most songs are modal.

Actually i think that bassist should learn music theory and come up with a balance. Cause essentialy a bass players job is to be the back bone of a song and sometimes u can go by feel, cause the human body is trained not to create and listen to dissonant sounds thats why people can play with "Feel". Like when u play a Eb in a C maj song some people will shiver.

But at the end of the day knowing your theory will help u in the long run. Cause as u progress your goin to want to play harder things and harder forms of music. most metalist will want to play prog rock/metal while most blues players will want to learn jazz. knowing your music theory can help u learn to play these styles easier and u will be able to come up with creative lines and know how to move around the chord changes.

To end of my ramblings i believe that musicians should learn both abrsm and american jazz music theory. Cause if u wanna be a complete musician u need to know what your playing and what your goin to play. learn to sing out a bass line before u play it or sing what your playing. It really helps up your creativity lvl and makes u play things that u cant play by feel. cause when u go by feel sometimes u are not sure wat ur gonna hit next. knowing your scales will help u know your notes which will help u to be able to sing out and play creative basslines.

thats the end of my ramblings... sorry for the long boring post

hey bassics,

i think your post was helpful ... personally i totally agree with you regarding music theory.

Music theory helped me alot in my learning and playing journey and i can't stress how much more important a musician must know his theory. It's like trying to build a building without laying the foundations.

I'm currently teaching bass guitar to some students and i alwas start them off early with music theory so that in the future when they advance further it won't be so hard for them to catch up on things.

Regarding singing out your lines, have been trying to do that but i feel like an idiot when i try .. thanks for reminding me to go back to the bassics and get things going again.

Anyway, at the end of the day, i have to second the knowledge of theory, helps so much to shape your lines in such a clearer way then when you dunno theory.

LONG LIVE MUSIC THEORY!! .. WOOT!
