Whos feeling tense here? You guys are taking these net-discussions way too seriously! Stars, you should know that we cannot convey facial expression and tones-of-voice over the net, stop assuming these things! lol

 :weedman: resident hippie here... must do my job .. prevent war ya know ? promote peace and embetterment for the world man !

u c the context of the words can sense tension rising up man later it overboils and overfloweth and causeth much destruction and death , fear this i must.

just dont wanna the bass forum to degenerate into :smt013 :axe:

or :smt068 :smt076 :smt072

Haha. You sure have a lotta cool emoticons there. Ermm. Nothing about theory though. Hey, how about a random jam guys? Nothing shows a better need for theory than improv I believe. Maybe I'm wrong.

hmm ? i dunno . i believe a little knowledge of theory and a keen trained hearing is essential for every musician

i think a good balance of lotsa things, few being theory, exposure, practice, experience, improvisation...(etc etc) will make a good musician anyhow.

true, lots of "new" / "n00b" bassists dont know anything and happen to chance upon the easiest instrument to learn till a 'basic' level, so they would can call themselves a bassist. don't get offended fellow bassists, i have had friends who started out like that and later on found out how much the bass is essentially full of a world of its own that they've decided to further their knowledge in many areas to play better. everyone starts somewhere!

eh seriously i really dunnoe wat i'm playing at times,.. it just goes on and one till i it sounds too weird. i'm on wrong key lol.

its just like whn i hve a chord progression of B or Bminor,. i i just go wif the feel of the song... bu ti hve no idea which note i'm on till i'm back to the root and it goes again..

btw wanted to ask..

who ever started the music theory.. wat was the point ?

was it a standard. or was it just becos he wanted to take note of wat he had tried and only by naming wat he had tried could get him further.

like wat victor wooten say. all this stuff is just like language. how u use our vocabs and stuff. is ur grammer rite or wrong. are u using adjective .blah blah..

noein more of this will help u well in ur playing and it will let u noe wat u can play if someoen plays a key.

two cents worth.

i still dunnoe my scales and chords. damn...

ahaha i HAD no grasp of theory whatsoever, that's how i started off. now i'm rather intermediate and it does help communicate with other band members that you're playing with. e.g. when your electric guitarist goes, "lemme solo over B major pentatonic!" Then you know what scale to play, that kinda stuff.

enjoy the freedom of being theory-less if you are, ignorance is bliss sometimes.
enjoy the structure of having a foundation of theory to lean on, there's less chaos sometimes.

eh ignorance to me is never a bliss.
lol

yeah sometimes u can get more melodic whn u dun tink of too much things like theory stuff.. but thy can oso help u to build up wat u can play wif.

kinda like water. able to make u float and capsize ur boat.

why do players like flea and sheehan get awae wif it w/o the theory,.
haiz,.. why dun i hve the talent in it...

Flea and Sheehan probably know some form of theory, if not for real than maybe sub-consciously. If you checked out some of their playings, for example, Flea in RHCP, The Greeting Song, you realise that the patterns do originate from some form of a scale.

hey...ho let`s go!!!!!

u can learn abt all the theories that`s available in the world.....but if u dun have the GROOVE,FEEL,SKILLS......no use also....

it`s all abt the feel lah.......

yeah man its all bout feeling.

the best song i heard wif alot of feelin is from Steve Vai. lol
the 7th song album.

For the Love of God.
tender surrender..

EQUILIBRIUM IS THE WAY!

Haha, I suppose that Bass theory and your Groove work hand in hand.

If your Groove is like ultimate already, but you lack in theory than your groove will just die because you can't express your feelings into a 'tune'.

If your Theory is top form, but you know groove, than you can't put the theory to use no matter what.

SO! Each one limits the other! Have both! Of course one would probably argue that groove is more important since theory can learn one...

I was fortunate enough to have started out on the piano and that really grounded me in my musical knowledge and theory. I cannot say enough about how much theory has helped me in my understanding and playing of the bass. Just because you play I, IV and V's most of the time and have tabs to figure your way around songs really is no excuse for not learning at least the basics of music theory, especially reading notes, basic scales and chord structures.

Once you understand the basics and stuff, you'll find that it opens up a whole new world in both your playing, and also your knowledge of how you fit within the whole scheme things within a band.

Bottomline - if you don't know it, I'm sure you'll still be able to get by. But if you're really serious, you should invest some time in learning some basic theory - it's really no loss to you at all. There isn't a single bass teacher in the world who'll tell you that theory isn't important in your development as a bassist.

years and years and YEARS of practice, jamming with other musicians, listening to various kinds of music, trial and error, more practicing, building and listening to their own melodies, etc. etc. etc.

Where can I learn theory from?

books, the net...bass theroy is not that difficult...i learn from school..

lets start with concert Bb major scale....Bb , C , D , Eb , F , G , A , Bb.
Easy enough for most players...
Theory is that every song has a key that is used...most songs i play are in concert Bb..so i naturally use the notes on the Bb scale...same rule applies for other songs..hope it helps

BTW: Is it me..or are pianist such good bass guitarists..like cherns

www.cyberfretbass.com

i recommend this site for beginners ( like me ) !

i'm not too sure about the pentatonic scale,

let's say it's the C major

so it's :
C
D
E
F
G
B
A

right? what can i or should i do with it?
