bass player leadin instead of guitars?

Aiya. One word.

Muse.

Go listen to the bass on songs like Hysteria and you'll see what I mean.

The bass doesnt always have to be shoved into the background. It can work with the guitar to produce a huge sound. :p

Its all about sonic texture. Some bassists sound like Pianos, others sound like horns (fretless, bridge pickup), or even upright bass (Dub tones, P basses and yes uprights). Rockers got so used in the past to the classic tones of OD guitars, that its weird to hear horn-like bass solos for instance. But nowdays, I guess the younger ones want to try something new.

John Myung

Well John Myung frm Dream Theatre is good w his Bass playing, but I don't see him wanting to play the lead in the dvds. I saw his fingers practically goin all over the fretboard & I can't hear nothing on my TV speakers, but when I boost my 5.1 speakers, I can hear exactly all the fill-ins & stuffs he did & its real kewl *toot*

Sometimes its not just about yourself, its about everyone in e band. We do our best for the good of the band & the songs & the audiences rite?!?!

Re: John Myung

The only time when its about ourselves is during us, a locked bedroom, a bass/guitar and some porn. *COUGH and dies*

that pretty much sums up my social life.

i got a new bass too! mwahhahah!!

... this might not necessarily have to be in the form of solos.. just by locking in with your drummer, and shuffling between several grooves, adding some licks in between here and there, can enhance the band's sound tremendously.

for an idea of what i mean, you can try listening to victor wooten..

Agree, I think the virtue of a musician is not measured by how often they're given the chance to do the soloing.

There are 10-cent and 10-million rhythm players around. I would much more be happy to watch a 10-million rhythm player than a 10-cent soloist - or well.. not a soloist, but just that guy with cranking ego messing around with his newly bought instrument.

If you have one these 10-cent 'soloists' in your band, its just too bad..

Btw, I love mr. sheehan's kind of 'rock soloing on the bass', one of a kind, but for my taste, i'm more into those 'jazzy groove' solos.

+1, definitely agree, i dun wanna b under the guitar, juz wanna b more distinct, hav a bigger role, not juz soloing.. discussed this topic wif Bong earlier, he's my bass instructor, he was supportive of it, givin me tips on how to work it out, how to fit the guitarist in da band etc. he mentioned dat most bassists wud rather do jazz as it allows dem more freedom compared to rock where the guitars tend to dominate, billy sheehan stands out tho, no matter wad he does, the mark of a true virtuoso

billy sheehan he is shreading da bass man.. \m/ he stand out out of the rest.. try do ur part in bass.. :) to maybe it can be a new generation of rockl :D

Agreed that bass is very important but most underated. I have this analogy:

Drums - Skeleton
Bass - Flesh
Guitars/keyboards - Skin
Vocals/ solos- Face

Without the bass the music will be "fleshless", empty and void.

my bassist is actually also a metal guitarist who loves playing grindcore and metalcore and wicked technical stuff, which is kinda why we love him on bass. he comes up with these amazing running bass lines that are clearly metal influenced while simultaneously holding the song together.

it's VERY cool!!! imagine Thrice guitars, except being played on bass, and used as rhythm instead of lead, with 2 rhythm guitars on top of it, or 1 rhythm and 1 lead part, or 2 countermelodic/lead parts. very huge, fat, aggressive sound!!

agreed. bass is probably the most underrated instrument instrument. alot of people think bass is easy to play, until they try it themselves(i myself was one of these people). whithout bass theres just no 'kick' in the music. sounds empty. anyone who thinks bass is easy should listen to victor wooten.

Are you talking about west grand boulevard?

Woah ... self praising ... your band really that good meh? sounds too much of mxpx for me ... good quality recording though . but always remember not to get big headed . self praising is DEFINITELY not good . wat if ppl label your band as a cocky band or self centered ... just my 2 cents worth of thoughts
