Bands that change their style

We've seen a couple of bands that change their style... For that 'mainstream' tag...

Here's just a few bands i once enjoyed but no longer dues to their drastic change...

Avenged Sevenfold - Despite their current success was due to their City of Evil album, i prefer the period before M Shadows changed his vocal styles. It wasn't due to a broken voice, but rather, change of music direction. Straight cut metalcore with albums like Sounding the Seventh Trumpet and Waking The Fallen, it was the time that I feel A7X was at their best.

All That Remains - Metalcore from the start till now, but what happened when they released "Overcome"? Philip Labonte going for the clean vocals? Sounds like Trivium after "Ascendancy". I admire ATR for their guitar solos, probably very well respected, and also Phil's range of vocals from smooth to growls... Thankfully, their trademark guitar solos remain, but the Phil's change in direction of vocal style is probably tragedy...

Children of Bodom - If they don't start focusing on Melodic Death Metal like At The Gates, instead of touring with Metalcore bands, then I wouldn't be surprise if their next release is a metalcore album like ATR. They've got good solos, no doubt... But I'm starting to hear breakdowns...

Underoath - Most Underoath fans these days, probably the newbies, wouldn't believe that they were once a death metal band. Unheard of then, they immediately transformed themselves to a band that will appeal to most teens today... I still believe it's for the sick of money, and not for the love of music.

---------------------

With all these changes, I'm actually very impressed with Bleeding Through. Consistent metalcore band that takes their music to the very extreme.
Their new release can be heard on MySpace... And with tracks like "Declaration", "Death Anxiety", this bands is definitely a risk-taker and they took it well...
With hints of melodic death metal vocals, atmostpheric black metal synth that sounds similar to Dimmu, this band is definitely doing their best to 'disconnect' themselves from the metalcore scene.

So guys, any opinions on a certain band you're disappointed or happy that they changed their style of music (not only metal)? Is it for the better, or the worse?

Every Muse album and Incubus album has a totally different feel to it, as if it is another band.. Each and everyone of those albums rocked in their own way!

katatonia, they changed after jonas renske can't scream properly and started to utilize clean vocals and i actually find their releases after that more enjoyable...

All that remains...i was quite surprised when i listened to two weeks from overcome....for me their fall of ideals - era is the best

cradle of filth..from good metal releases to synth-pop songs....but their new album is said to be different,a return to midian-era form

bleeding through...declaration is okay..but for me the album doesn't stick with me...like the truth or this is love, this is murderous...but very consistent metal

my friend let me listen to act of desperation by underoath...completely different from their other songs i've listened to....

bring me the horizon has changed to metalcore from deathcore! i think the next album they will become softer, dissapointed, but then bmth still sounds good now. from first to last changed alot too from post hardcore to poppish rock now.. no screams at all. damm i miss sonny moore, best chnages is escape the fate, craig mabbit makes etp perfect!

underoath changed because the guitarist, bassist and vocalist left to do their own acts. thats like half the band leaving, therefore imo i think they changed.
thrice changed too but they just matured up, all their albums rock by the way.
new found glory sounds heavier now so thats a plus.
errrr most drastic i think would be still a7x, i hate them.

I thought Radke was what made ETF unique. They sound kinda generic now. Haha! Definitely Muse, for better or worse. Trivium went from metalcore to Hetfieldcore to Post-hetfieldcore. Preferred their older materials...

And YES THRICE! -fanboy~

Yea, In Flames. I've only just started listening to their stuff, and I'm already quite a huge fan. I must say though, I haven't listened to much of their old stuff, more their recent ones, so I can't really say much. But just based on their new stuff alone is enough to make me a pretty big fan. Lots of my friends go "yea, nothing's good after Colony", so yea, I might be an even bigger fan if I do listen to their old stuff I guess. :D

If anyone's heard of The Butterfly Effect? I thought their change from more metal to more alternative rock was a bit abrupt, but I still welcomed it. Didn't really get them at first, they had nice tunes, but I just didn't feel the... emotion. And then when The Final Conversation of Kings came out, I was reeled in. :)

not every band is changing music styles just for the sake of breaking into the mainstream. you didn't play the same type of aggressive music for the past 10 years, you would never know. seriously. you cant have all your records sounding the same.

metallica!!

Alt-ellica!

Yellowcard. Their Lights and sounds album has significantly less violin than their previous album, Ocean Avenue.

Rush also has changed music styles through the decades, but I liked their pre-synth to synth era stuff best. Their newer ones sounded a little too heavy for me. =P

Red Hot Chili Peppers also has a change in musical direction when Dave navarro replaced john frusciante and when john came back. By the Way was very different from 'normal' RHCP albums.

To balance the post, AC/DC, Dragonforce, Dream theater, GnR [up till use your illusion] kept to their music styles. Like all of their stuff. :-D

Not to mention Stadium Arcadium. I LOVE RHCP. every single album from their self-titled to by the way. even one hot minute. but I dislike stadium arcadium. maybe two or three songs i like but i can't seem to like the entire album like i did for the last eight albums

Off the top of my head:

Radiohead - When they went all electronic on Kid A after the brilliant OK Computer, man I can't even describe the disappointment I felt upon listening to the album.

Foo Fighters - Went from punk-pop of The Color of the Shape to the really boring MOR influenced Nothing to lose. Lost interest in them after that.

The Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity is really hard for me to listen to at one go, but with Miss Machine they balanced it out nicely with some slow interludes and clean singing , it's my favorite album. But they did too much of the latter in Ire Works, their latest album, lost all their intensity with that release.

Now playing: Callisto - Pathos via FoxyTunes
