BAND COMPETITIONS??

Wonder what you guys out there think about band competitions in Singapore? I'm not asking to compare one against the other but as a whole what effect does band competitions have on the local music scene.

In general, i think it gives rise to bands being formed, sustained etc. It definitely raises standards of musicianship as well.

I think it doesnt really do much for the scene.
Its like a venue for ppl to win prizes and sponsorship for recordings
thats all. Maybe gives the winning bands a little reassurance.

But doesnt really do anything to the scene. Maybe it helps by giving ppl some kinda benchmark, to see how good other bands are. But seriously our band comps here, simply stop there.

It elevates some bands to some popularity amongst musicians....catches our eye...but mostly..just stops there..hahaz...I wish though that those who do win comps.....gig more..like go to schoooools.....the most ridiculous places....and showcase their talents....I think that would help the local scene...with the kinda materials and local musician support they have...
Who knows...some band could garner as much popularity as 'The Quest' did in the 60's in Singapore (The drummer's used to be my teacher)

For those who don't know, The Quest was a local hit-band in the 60s...they played mostly pop tunes...and released a couple of Cds....juz last year a musical was made about them.....Too bad i missed it..

Competitions are fun.
Tiring, but really really rewarding. Win or lose, we all have something to learn at the end of the day. Be it getting to know the other bands, in which i quote 3notesABar.."Peers"..or just sittin back and enjoy every band's performance.

Usually, upcoming bands gauge their talents by entering competitions. Just to see how far. If ya lose, try harder next time...if ya win..plan how you proceed from then on..

it just makes people get all competitive and develop OCD. haha. jst kidin.

So why do some bands reluctant to participate in competition? Also, will there be a time where a band would say "enough" and what makes the band say that?

maybe sum bands are to shy to play... u can see familiar faces on stage. i noe a few bands who play comps all the time, then they gave up.reason bein tat they wann concentrate on demos or albums.
but seriously is fun to watch the comps even if the bands are like 'regulars'... its all abt the music. and making frds

yup..i got to noe Dr Rhy from Battle of the Bands. Wrestled with them while we were waiting for the soundcheck..got to noe a lot of other bands who have what it takes to be amongst the best..

Sometimes, they gave up cos that "fire" died along the way. any point in time someone would wanna be very realistic and say that they might be better off concentrating on work and family..i noe this happened to me a lot of times and other bands suffer from this too...

demo wise or album wise, subjective lah.. some bands already have demos or albums to their names but still wanna compete..hence they form project bands cos most comps do not allow bands who have albums to compete.

i still prefer making friends and enjoying what other bands have in store during competitions.

So does it help if we have say 10 competitions in a year? Is it worth the while for organziers of compees to have 9 other people competing to organize commpees?

it really does depend..
last year from what i know, there were around 6 or 7 competitions thru out the year...with IBX competition closing the year with its finals on 26th DEc 04.

there might be other band competitions..some organised by CCs..

Usually, it depends on the organisers' risk taking cos band competitions requires a lot of spending on their part..but end of the day, they get their brand name or company ID promoted as band competitions garner a lot of attention..from both the local music scene and audiences as well.

for me,even if there's like 20comps a year,it'll be great!!! more comps=more bands=more music=more frds=more challenges=more exposures!!!

tat is the only time for players in spore to showcase their talents. if u r gd,other bands will wanna improve beta. n tats a challenge. and tat may like bring local scene to a step forward.

fatskunks are wonderful ppl(even during our wrestling match). all bands i've seen r nice n friendly. we learn from each other to enjoy music
