Auxillary hats

Hi all, it's just a question I've always been wondering. Auxillary hats, as we know it are hats we put usually on the right hand side of the kit as we have our main timekeeper on the left already. So for the auxillary hats what suggestions are good? For e.g. if your main hats are dark in nature, does that mean gettin bright for your auxillary hats? Another thing is I understand auxillary hats can be used to achieve different types of sounds? Some people like it loose for the sizzle it has? Am I right or wrong?

So what is the main consideration in getting a pair for auxillary hats, keeping well in mind that I already have a main timekeeper already. Also, how do remote hats work too? I understand it involves the usage of a cable attached, but what is the mechanism involved?

Thanks everybody.

That really depends on what kind of music you play doesn't it? For me I fix my auxillary hats in a semi-opened position because i only use them when I'm using my double bass pedals. So for me i just need them to sound loud and trashy when played semi-open. In fact all i did was use my old hats (which sound pretty ok for this purpose) when i upgraded to my HHX groove hats.

Remote hats still require your foot to operate, which is a problem when you're using both feet for double bass work. There are also hat stand pedals (i only know of the tama one) with a foot operated lock mechanism that allows you to lock the hat in whatever position it's currently in, which then frees up your foot. Problem is that this pedal is really expensive and if you have old hats lying around, it's cheaper to just get a cheapo 2nd hihat stand and use them instead.

Just my $0.02. YMMV

Yeah...I was also thinking of getting a (New Pearl Remote Hi-Hat Stands_ which have to order directly from Swee Lee (pay a deposit and takes around 4 to 5 months to come in) so I can fiax my Paiste Signature 10" Hats on it.

Currently I do have a 14" Paiste Signature Sound Edge Hats that I am using on the Right side (this one is not using a hi-Hat stands - just clamp together)...and yes my Time-Keeping Hats is a Darker One the New Signature Mark I Hats..

I think it looks nice like these, have lots of Cymbals, and 5 foot-pedals on the Kit.

I just wanna make it look nice - that's all.........Hehehehe.

OK I forgot to tell you all ... Swee Lee can - OFFER Tama Remote Hi-Hats Stands at SPECIAL PRICES ............ If you all want......but only for the Tama Remote Hi-Hats Stands.

I will have to order the Pearl cause I wanna have it all as Pearl Hardware - but the Remote Tama Stands is 100% Value For Money.......

Really ah =O I've never seen them there before. One day when I have money I'm considering getting one. I'm also thinking of making my own.

Just call them anytime - only for this particular item - Tama Remote Cable Hi-Hats Stand (Ready Stock).

I'm going down to day to pay deposit to order the Pearl Remote Cable Hi-Hat Stand RH-2000 Model - S$350.00 (wait 5 months Delivery)........so happy love it...

I don't know if it's call Cobra Clutch or what - they offer me a Tama Remote Hats (they have many Brand New) at special prices if I don't insist on ordering the Pearl Ones....I dont want it - but they told me that it will be special to anyone of you all too...just for this item.

PS:- Not that the Tama ones is not good - but because since all my HardWares are Pearl - it will look very funny to have - just one-Tama Hardware there - so I have to order the Pearl....that's the reason..

I saw the pics - the Remote Hats of the Pearl have (2 Legs also) - so Can it still be placed at the right hand-side? ..... with the 2 legs that means - I can't place this Remote Hats Pedal just next to the (Right leg Bass Drum Pedal closely) - am I correct? ........ or the Remote hats is mean't to be place at the left-Hand Side (similar as the use of the Normal-Hats Stands)?... confuse now.

See - Got Legs?

Eric I believe people usually place the remote hats, the one you have in the picture to the left. You have to step on it to release, or maintain the hats closed in a position right? Cos' your right leg will probably on the bass pedal.

I've seen some setup with auxillary hats before, for example there was this super heavyweight auxillary hat setup by Mr Tama at the Zildjian clinic not long ago. It was more like a massive clamp onto one of his Pearl stands. I think for some of us on a budget, a cheapo hi-hat stand with the hats in a loose position should suffice.

Usually what type of music would require the often use of auxillary hats? I mean of course in addition to having more variety, and making the kit look more massive?

Correct me if im wrong.. It's called a Cobra Clutch rite?

Cobra Clutch was the one i was talking about. There's a foot operated locking mechanism beside the pedal which allows you to lock the hat in whatever position it's currently in. So for instance you can close the hat and lock it that way and leave it closed without having to hold the pedal down. Probably useful but too expensive for me :p

When i got my auxiliary hat stand, what i actually wanted was one of those fixed holder things that you mentioned (since I won't be using the pedal anyway). Swee Lee didn't have the Tama one and looking at the price of the item, i didn't want to order it either. It was actually cheaper to get the cheapo hihat stand and use that instead.

As for music style, I would say metal/prog uses it a bit due to the use of double bass patterns quite a bit? Sure you could bang on ur hihats wide open but that doesn't sound nice. And you can't leave them too closed either. So a 2nd hat or the cobra clutch is a nice solution. Check out the cymbal profiles of metal and prog (Portnoy, Virgil Donati, Neil Peart, etc) drummers and you'll find most of them have dual hat setups.

Drumsolo86: - - Auxillary Hats I guess are not often used only maybe sometimes in Jazz-Setup and Fusion especially. So yes you’re right for my Purpose is just to make my current Kit look more massive with Pearl Hardware (as I love the 2000 Series Hardwares from Pearl).

I’ve checked and I saw how this Pearl Remote Hats Pedal might be able to be Mounted just next to the Main-Bass Drum Pedal on the Right-Hand Side yesterday at Swee Lee Music.

I saw a Tama Normal hi-Hat Stands (they too have the 2-Legs which is Riveted to the Frame of the Stands) but – was taken out completely (so you only see the Pedal) - - Of course how could it be stable without the 2 legs…..So have to Fix (a Hi-Hat to Bass Drum Adaptor) here - - - and………………The Hat Stands very very Firmly on the ground..

BUT.ttttttttttttt there is only one Problem (have to find out) – because the above stand is a Normal Stand and not a Remote-Hi-Hat Stands which the Centre-Hi-Hat Shaft is so much Shorter and Lower (This is the area that theHi-Hat To Bass Drum Adaptor hold on to each other) ………………..meaning we cannot clamp the adaptor to the Top of the Bass Drum, maybe only on the Right-Lower Side

Hi Akira-Portnoy,

Nope, Cobra clutch isn't the remote/auxiliary Hi hat pedal. It is sort of a pedal that controls a hi-hat pedal's either open/loose/close. Here are some picture for your reference.

This is how a cobra clutch looks like by Tama.

This is how it works.

Hope this is informative to you.
