 attention james, moderators of SOFT!!!!

I have the perception that most of the laojiaos see the changes and feel "sian" just thinking about it. It would be good if they could come back and start posting more often, but i feel that something has to be done first. For everyone to stand up just like that if nothing's being done, it just doesn't sound right...

it's 'SOFT- it's music in singapore'

there's a forum page where we discuss all things n problems regd music in SG. but there's so much flamings, banters n side trackking goin on. yeah, freedom of speech n say some, but i say dats being less tactful wit a lil short of intelligence.

mind you there's a lot of new musicians who want to learn here, but cudden find the answers . maybe the really gd musicians who cud provide the answer get turned off by some irresponsible members.

having rules or shud i put it as a 'gentle reminder' (for those uncomfortable with the r word) as a sticky helps in a way that it will slowly develop a good forum culture in SOFT. which in turn will makes this forum a gd learning avenue for musicians. it definitely wont affect ideas, creativity, or camaradie in SOFT.

in fact, with the current state that SOFT is in now, it really deter those really experienced musicians in giving comments. how many of you happen to be in conversations with top cats who tinks how turned off they were by the forum here? how many of those who tinks this place is getting lame?

Ultimately, what and how you post reflects on the sort of person you are.
but when there's a lot of us here gave bad posts, it really reflects the overall music scene here in singapore.

it's all abt mindsets n music culture in the end...

theres alot of music forums in europe n states dat adhere to their own forum rules eg musicianforums, talkbass etc. n those forum are really informative and arguementative. their 'talk all u can' sub forum are also musically informative in fact.

SOFT is the only one forum in SG dat really have a huge following, but pls dun abuse it..

and i have nothing against kopi tiam sub forum. it is kopitiam aniway!
but then again, it's all abt mindsets n music culture in the end...

I totally agree about the on going flaming and childish behavior of certain "members" who are basically hiding behind the mask of IT annomity to "get a reaction" from ppl they target - for what ever self deluded, selfish reasons.

Remember that most of the tyme these ppl dun even know each other in real life or had even met ....Would these ppl have the guts to come up to us & "flame us in the face?" hahaha... I dont think so...and that gives you your answer...IGNORANCE IS BLISS.. I say just ignore (no one likes feeling he or she is talking to him /her self in the forum rite?...even the whackos out there) & report these forum criminals to the mods and have their post deleted and IP banned...problem solved...

Actually, it's kind of sian when you go to the guitar - gear sub forum and see repeated threads when they can actually be merged into one.

I usually see beginners looking for advice to purchase an '$X' guitar and '$X' amp, maybe we can come out with a few sticky threads to facilitate such enquiries.

PS: Vaiyen, Vern didnt altogether disappear. He recently just PMed that he wanna sell his Univalve. :smt003

Rules 8, 9, 11. wtf?

dude, if youre gonna imply rules like this, i dont think alot of ppl will like soft.com forum.

yes we do have occassional arguments and misunderstanding. if u impose ridicuclous rules. it WONT be any fun.

what crap..

I fully agree with no 8 (about signature).

Some poeple are having stupid signature, as big as 1/3 of my screen (and some even more stupid, got flashing image). And posting like only "+1". This is really annoying.

couldn't agree with you more!

should we softies pool our efforts into creating a sticky for newer users? I got a few threads in mind already. :) Guitar based mainly though

You know guys... the more we discuss/argue/fight/think about this rules thing... its NEVER going to happen.

As much as some/most of us thing rules will hinder the forum and "freedom" of speech... but you have to agree... more and more posts are getting out of control and irrelevant to the topic.

I would say YES to a set of rules that would clamp down on irresponsible posting and set a standard that will facilitate the overall experience of forum-ing.

I'm not a lao jiao but I will admit that I do feel tired when it comes to irresponsible posting. Not that I am going to leave SOFT or anything, but its just more tedious having to come in and see some dude post about what *insert gear* should I get? And the topic has been discussed like 5 times already.
Worst of all... where can I find tab? This really made my blood boil.

James, I'm all for setting some rules and standards so that SOFTies will get an idea how responsible posting should be done. If you need help, I'm available for this.

i think we should make a few stickies thread in the sub sections just like other forums out there. So if u need to ask anything of that sort thy can post it there. Just like the GEAR thread in the guitar section.

any idea would be dumping the old hreads into a Archive Subsection. Just like this anime forum : http://seed-forum.com

just my 2 cents

to tell the truth, i dont think i even like any of the rules...

SOFT is already fun, fine and safe place to hang out...
with these extra rules implemented, many would enjoy it as much as now..

i guess.. :D

The problem with mods is that it will in fact dilute the essense of the intention of forum. As James now has the last say, so it's still one captain steering the ship. So if you got 5 people holding the steering wheel, will the vessel go anywhere??

With a captain, we can to travel where he steers the ship. So we can be at hawaii one day, china the next. We will even go to russia or iraq sometime. With 5 captains, we might only be circling Sentosa permanently. Then the passengers will get bored and jump ship.

Yes, it will be colorful and seasonal. There will be good times and bad times. Well, that's what a marriage is all about....... heehee....

I fully support the current concept for him to decide upon whatever is reported to him. We have to take the good with the bad.

i think what we need is a group of mods. settled

I feel what we need is not a mod who post alot, but someone who checks the website often, responding when necessary. The old soft days were good. Very informative like back in 02 or 03.

The whole idea of having multiple mods is to lessen the load on the captain. I think as the forum grows, we cannot expect James to handle everything. He has a day job.

Some stickies that I often see in forums in US which has a high under 17s forumites population.

For Guitar - Gear
- Begineers guitars and amps reccomendation. Come to think of it, we often reccomend the same thing all over again. But we can have something based on a fixed budget, with a gradual increment.

- Stompboxes recommendations or multi efx.

For Guitar - How to
-Tabs website. Eg. Mxtabs, UG, and other similar sites, seperate for mandarin or other languages tabs.

As for rules, let there be only house rules. The simple rules such as be polite, no flaming or religious topics or any racist comment. These are easily understood rules and IMO, it makes no sense to implement more rules. When we were young, didnt we break more rules than now?

Well I guess that if anyone wants a perfectly good forum with 100% responsible members, then sad to say, it probably will not happen at all. I think all posts all fine as long as they are not explicit or offensive in nature. That's my stupid opinion la, lol. For me personally, I do not mind seeing posts which are repeated, at least it keeps the forum alive. But I know that irritates many of you guys. But can we really stop that from happening? There will still be an occasional new comer who will do that. Oh well, I'll leave everything to James and let him decide what should be done. I agree with Chan Min, many interesting people in this forum. Everyone here rocks, be it new or old :) Cheers! :drinkers:

what crap..

Rule 9 : We have a Kopi-Tiam forum what

Rule 10 : Unless on off-topic threads, this is already very rare

Rule 11: I don't see you complaining, you don't even have an avatar

I DO have avatars incase you didnt noticed. i took it off. i'm not against what the author wrote. i'm okay with rules seriously.

but what really turn me off is the post no. 8,9,11.
i dont know if you guess agree with this but i dont.
all the other rules are okay. but the four stated above is ridiculous.

so yea.. james, if you do want to impose rules. try to limit them. thanks.i dont think we can get a 100% good forum. theres none come to think of it.
the good and the bad makes the forum fun and nice to hand around.

I'm alright with out of topic post such as "Should smoking be banned?" , "What is customer service?" , "What's the best movie you've watch so far?" and so on and so forth as it involves sensible interaction and I believe that we need to discuss on out of topic stuffs at times but not too often of course because if SOFT is gonna be strictly music-based discussion alone , it's gonna be a boring place....

But what really irritates me is post like "A bird just shi++ed on my head this afternoon!" , "I saw a snail getting run down by my dad's car!" , "My classmate crapped in his pants!" if you get the jest of what I'm trying to say. I mean , so what if a bird shi++ed on my head? Do I really have to share it to the whole SOFT community? What is it so insightful about a bird shi++ing on my head? Completely redundant I must say. Now that's my definition of irresponsible posting!

Another thing I would like to highlight is certain members of SOFT are just starting an argument for the sake of arguing (this has nothing to do with my letter). For example , remember that trevor dummer guy and then certain members of SOFT wanted to flame him because of this quote "Chinese or Eurasians preferred". I mean , if you wanna argue about something , at least please have some form of solid evidence to support your claim and not start a flaming war because you think that it's a glorious thing to do!

Indeed, the stickie thing is a great idea; something which I've advocated for quite some time. I can think of a few threads off the top of my head which will make very good stickies. What say you James?
I'm not really for the idea of a sorority of moderators because I foresee it will complicate human dynamics A LOT. We should preserve the camaraderie here as best as we can.
