Any way to tune guitar without a tuner?

it means you don't have the player required for playing the sound clips. Just go do a search for online tuners and i'm sure a lot will turn up.

you can use harmonics on 5th frets (except 3rd string), if the intonation of the guitar is accurate.

or you can do an E check. playing all the E notes across the guitar, including harmonics, to generally hear if the tuning's alright.

Hey turbo... If I'm not wrong, intonation affects the fretted note, not the harmonics. Your intonation can be out but your harmonics can still be in tune. Thats why people check intonation by comparing the fretted note against the tuned harmonic, not the other way round.

And because the guitar is an instrument whereby it is tuned via Equal Temperament, you can't get tuned via that harmonic method.

Try it... tune it using the harmonics method...

Play an E chord, it will be out of tune. But play and A chord, and its okay!
(Ahem... it might be the other way round but I can't rem. )

Here's a nice article on tuning...

Haha vaiyen. :)

I've had the problem of tuning by ear.... i'd always always end up with either the E sounds good, A sounds bad, or the other way round.

Yeah, sure, i could tune to an E nicely... then I can't touch the A chord and vice versa.

Nowadays, I use the harmonics to get relatively in tune, then use octaves to tune.... that is, if I dont have my trusty TU12...

no guitar tuner, can download one from the net what...
if u'r using an electric, then have to get the converter jack thingy.
for me, i have an acoustic. so i get a 5 bucks mic from sim lim, plug it in my com, clip it at the hole of my guitar, then tune away...

ermm, www.download.com look for ap tuner

tune it by listening to a song where you know the key .... or use a tuning fork .... if you know how to use it. :)

Yeah!!

I used to listen to the song Nothing Else Matters - Metallica to tune my guitar when i didnt have a tuner. 8)

Using all those need you to have good hearing. if you have a comp mic i suggest just dling an online tuner, then place the mic infront of your amp and tune from there ...

@shredcow: check out the buzz feiten tuning system. supposed to give pleasing chords no matter how you play them -_^

There is this method that I learnt when I was just starting out, but it requires you to have the lowE in tune. That can be accomplished with a tuning fork or by the sound-recordings commonly found on the Internet. This method would be kind of redundant if you are using the sound-recording, but whatever, here goes.

Tuning the 5th string.
1.) Pick the 6th string(lowE, already in tune), fretting it just behind the 5th fret.
2.) Pick the open 5th string.
* Allow both strings to play at the same time, the pitches should match. If the pitches do not match, adjust the 5th string accordingly.

Tuning the 4th string.
1.) Pick the 5th string, fretting it just behind the 5th fret.
2.) Pick the open 4th string.
* Allow both strings to play at the same time, the pitches should match. If the pitches do not match, adjust the 4th string accordingly.

Repeat the steps for the remaining strings (3rd and 1st string) except for the tuning of the 2nd string. Of which you follow the steps below,

1.) Pick the 3rd string, fretting it just behind the 4th fret.
2.) Pick the open 2th string.
* Allow both strings to play at the same time, the pitches should match. If the pitches do not match, adjust the 2th string accordingly.

I hope it helps, and apologies for how disorganised my post is.
