Any good jazz courses out there?

I've been playing the piano for a few yrs, reached the level of grade 8 and like most classical pianists, found it useless to me in terms of improvising and in pop/rock songs.

So i took i drums, got my sense of timing, played around the keyboards with some of my friends in a band and got better.

However i would like to take a step furthur and learn jazz progressions and blues scales and more improvisation skills and stuff.

Anybody know any good courses which i can go for?

If not i'm probably just going to go for the Yamaha Course at Plaza Singapura

Northwood specializes in jazz? Please don't joke. Ask the jazz guy there to reharmonize and do substitution for any jazz standard and he'll be stumped.

Better still.... bring a copy of Giant Steps and see him fumble.

Any jazz instructor worth his salt should be able to play ANY song from the Real Book and solo over the lines while creating harmonic interest with alterations, extensions, substitution and different voicings. That's really the basic.

Duvall: A slight "modification" to your statement is that it shouldn't be that "a good Jazz Educator" would be able to do those things u mentioned, but more a "Jazz Performer".
A good educator would be one who can IMPART knowledge that his/her student understands as opposed to "over the head"
Many a times, u'd find great players not being able to explain a technique clearly to a student, only to resort to "...you've got to FEEL IT" kind of "pedagogical skills"!
I'm sure there are whizz performers who can instruct just as well, out there, but it remains "elusive"

My point? Look for (or get recommendation) a teacher who can IMPART, not perform - you can get that by going to a concert! Agree? :P
