An Interesting Little Query...Take A Read...

Since I started playing at gigs with my band last year, we have lots of fun on stage, there obviously always mistakes which sometimes make me feel like the show was bad.

And sometimes the show can even sound messy due to the fact that most of the time the sound ON stage is not a great as the sound from the AUDIENCE perspective, and always problem of one musician cannot hear another whilst on stage.

But the band really seems to enjoy themselves and just ignore the mistakes and continue. Its all well and ok. But after the show my mind gets stuck on the fact that the show wasnt perfect cus theres mistakes, etc.

Then I go talk with my friends and they all say that they cannot hear mistakes, but the show is really good and the sound was really good. I cant tell whether are they trying to be nice or just being honest? Because the same thing always happens on every other gig. Everyone always says that same thing.

Plus sometimes before we leave we are approached by random ppl who watched our show and they also say its really good too.

Has anyone else experience this before? And also cannot help wondering whether its ppl just being nice or whether they are really honest....

Anyone care to add your thoughts on the matter?

99%% of the time - stage sound cant compare with house sound..

the only notable exception was when I played at the Esplanade main indoor hall some years back - solid shite sound man

just gotta record your gig & hope for the best

get some band registration fee badgeman, get some...

Hey Badgers,

After you've played on the stage, you probably remember vividly how many times you cock up. It's because all your attention was focus on your instrument(I think guitar for your case). Whereas for the audience, their focus keeps changing. For one moment, it could be on the drummer, the next one can even be on the bartender. It's hard to tell minor errors when you're listening to the music as a whole unless someone's timing is off.

I think your friends and the people who approach you meant what they said. =)

me & the guys in my 1st band SHADES were very concious about this when we 1st started out - the stage sound / house sound, proper words, solos etc etc..

we kinda realised later that it was more fun to let it go and just rock & roll .... besides 99% of the time cock ups are not noticable - unless u have very good musos in the audience.... even that too - who gives a hoot, we are all human and the whole idea is to have fun and not be more stressed over minor issues.

Nowadays, we only worry if THE CHEQUE PAYMENT FOR THE GIG is gonna clear!

I went to a friends gig at DXO last saturday and was there helping them take pictures.

There was this 1 part where he totally stopped playing for abt 3 seconds cause he got lost somewhere but it totally blended and sounded OKAY.

I guess ppl will only notice when its YOUR solo and your on boost and you press something totally offkey. Else let it go, the crowd will be clueless!

Things was most of the mistakes come from the most notciable of all, the drums. Intros and endings are really important to me. Plus im somewhat of a perfectionist.

Also some other ppl say that if the band really enjoyed themselves, most certainly the interested audience would have been too.

Anyways, have been doing gigs at Street Festival recently. Maybe some of you cud drop by and tell me. If interested la.... This Sunday (3rd June) 8pm - 9pm. My band name - TheExxit.

Hope to get some feedback............. Cheers.

perfectionist.
Thats the problem ...which i have struggled and try to erase from my system coz...makin mistakes reminds you are human ...

I can sit down and point mistakes made by BIG bands ...but those mistakes make each performance legendary !!

Enjoy your music, enjoy your band, enjoy your crowd ....you've got it !!

hey

seriously, no 1 will know what will happen on the stage or shows so even if you done wrong or what

they will not say that you're wrong..Unless, your band copies some bands TradeMarks or they way they move the show..

If not, no worries....

I started on bass with the misconception that "bass easy what, cock-up no one can hear also."

Interesting take on it gsonique. Cheers. Makes me feel better. Problem is, theres gonna be a problem if mistakes made by one person persist. Am i right? At some point there must be that - perfect take with the great performance. but nearly most of the songs we play, have no mistakes. Gladly.

badgeman...no mistake for nearly all the songs u lpay...

woah - you're a betterman than I am...

get some mistakes, get some

Live performance is more on the energy and the vibe created. A perfect take is good but if too perfect will sound a bit bland. Like Dream Theater, their live shows sounds exactly like the CD, perfect. But in the end you wonder why u spend your money on ticks to listen to them perform like the CD...

...

Err... Your first post reflects how 27 hundred million musicians feel after every show. This musician feels that if you had fun on stage, and the audience had fun with you, who cares if you played one or twenty bum notes? I'd rather see a band who looks like they enjoy being onstage than a band who pays far too much attention to their instruments to get every note right.

The quest for perfection is never complete.

what would you think if at the climax of the song, the guitarist closes his eyes, feels the groove of the song and blares out an amazing solo without even moving. would you be mezmorised? I would.

CHEERS EVERYONE. All this has given me reassurance.

Hope ya'll can make it down TOMORO for the street festival outside plaza singapura.

it probably would be mesmerising if he's standing a million miles away...

I rather playing without ever moving is so... wierd... regardless eys closed or not.. okay I think a better word would be stiff, or sterile, or mechanical.

I'm no fan of vai, but he makes guitar music, nicer to watch, rather than listen.

I'd be careful abt the mistakes part.

I once did a solo, went down on my knees near the front of the stage... acted like some raving loon with an axe. The audience loved it. Cheered for it. But the solo friggin sucked because... all that moving around messed up the technical aspects of the solo. Asked the people who watched the show about it. All said it rocked. yeah right. Showmanship with slop or good, proper playing? I'd rather play properly than to be Dragonforce.

Yeah, we can't help making mistakes because we're human but its NO EXCUSE for a sloppy performance.

Granted, the lay person don't know what's the diff and wouldn't notice much but you, as the musician, as the player, should still be at the very least, mildly critical of your performance.

Hold post-performance discussions after a day or 2 post show to talk abt it and note it down.

Improve. And move on after that.

Amazingly our mext performance, (Last Sunday) was alot better. Some mistakes still, but Im mezmerized by our performance of Stairway To Heaven, No mistakes, and still a damn rocking experience.
