but there're times I vote for bands to have fun on stage than worry about cockups. if it's not fun, it's work.
bands who need help are definitely the ones who appear to TRY PLAY PERFECT and still cock up big time. so that means you're not having fun trying to play it right, and you still play it wrong.
from my "gig-videoing" point of view, (I'm no musician to say anything as part of a band) indeed after the gig the band would ask me how their set was and all I can ask is, "you want the hard black truth or the white lie?" both have their own impact.
white lie : good - encourages the band. bad - makes them unmotivated/lazy/takeforgranted to try better next time. they think they're "there".
black truth : good - discourages the band (for the wimpy/easily kicked down with bad comments sort. you best disband and get a usual 9 to 5 job.) bad - makes them try harder to do better...
wait that isn't bad is it? but most likely next time they won't talk to you or get to be your friend anymore because you're such a perfectionist critic of an ass. this usually only apply to the petty bands who can't take honest criticism. get a reality check. basically don't just ask any random tom/dick/harry supporter/friend to feedback if you know they'd rather be nicely biased with their feedback.
back to badger's case, I think it's best if you feel insecure about how the set went, my advice is get someone to film your set and you do your own analysation. if you feel the problem don't lie with you (but your drummer) after watching the footage, on your next set, put a tripod and facing the drummer directly in case he goes denial. haha.
