i once owned and extensively modded a 70s Ibanes Blazer....maple neck with 2 pc swamp ash body, 2 pc hartail bridge - 2 hums which I modded with Dimarzios paf & tone zone...MY GOD, it was the best sounding and longest sutaining guitar I EVER PLAYED...

MANY YEARS ON I sold it to a struggling foreign muso for a song (as I had at the time about 17 other guitars on me)...always regreted that I never kept that Ibanez Blazer series strat ... if yrs is the vintage Ibanez - KEEP THEM...

Old Ibanez guitars are nice... esp since they were around during the period of most guitar technological advancement. Ibanez isn't a tradition bound company so that rocks for those would like to move on from erm... fenders and gibson. And those who prefer tradition well, shun Ibanez.

Anyway.. Ibanez is getting big bad and bold with their pricing and stuff nowadays... its all about the money...

yeah, its stained finish i suppose, the finish wore out, it was abit glossier before tt.

i am quite certain its swamp ash from the grains. basswood has got parallel and tight grains.

here is a swamp ash strat body

1984 catalog states that the guitar model is RS225.
Body is basswood and birch.

My logo on the guitar is golden in colour too. So i think its a diff model. not tt sure though, because the entire maple neck is much more yellowish

it's tuning is super stable too, you can rock the whammy bar like your chopping vegetables, it'll still remain in tune. partly due to the graphite nut i think.

btw, how does basswood typically sound like

Bought this RG120 for $60 in March this year. Custom made the pickguard to fix in SSS pickup configuration.

Hmm doesn't look like ash to me. Might be basswood after all.

here's my 2 cents worth on the issue:

doesnt look like swamp ash but the pix at the beginning of the thread showing the neck plaste - the grains are unmistakenly ash doe the actual top / back grains dont look like ash.

I've owend, repaired and paint stripped many old Ibanezes b4 - most came in Hard Ash (heavier / harder ash than swamp ash) though I had some solid colour models that turned out to be basewood. If the finish is dull, it cud have been that it previously was finished then stripped and stained. Laquering ash is not as easy as alder, basewood etc as its a "porous" woodand proper woodfilling, levelling etc has to be done to achieve the best results... and yes a high gloss finish esp for the body is highly desirable...

cheers
