The hole is usually drilled in the binding. Don't you have the pickguard on hand to do an actual measurement though? It's quite silly to drill blindly, your bracket might not fit the holes exactly.

u mean its ok to drill it anywhere as long as the hole suits the position of the bracket?

Place your pickguard on the guitar, angle it how you want, mark the location of the bracket's hole on your guitar and drill it. And yes you can drill it whereever although it should be on the binding. And if you haven't done this before or don't have professional tools, I highly recommend you get someone qualified to do it, although it really isn't a very complicated job.

Nonsense.. if you drill in part A the binding, your les paul is a goner... you should drill into the wood which is part B instead.. The binding is supposed to hold the maple top in place, if you drill into the binding, your maple top will pop open and the guitar goes "BOOMZ"

the primary purpose of the binding is not to hold any guitar component in place. it's conceived to cover the 'unsightly' different layers of wood used for the guitar's construction. we note there are other guitars out there sporting a maple (or others) cap on the main body piece without binding.

take your pickguard, place it on the guitar.mark where it should be drilled.the bottom screw should be drilled into the maple cap :)

its glue that holds the cap together.

spiderman: Wat. Firstly, the hole drilled for a pickguard is tiny. Secondly, I doubt that installing a pickguard will make your maple cap drop off just like that. "Nonsense" indeed.

Look at this picture. The maple cap seems to be still be ON the guitar, no?

To TS, you might wanna try a screwless pickguard instead, that would be more convenient.

If i were you ts i would just leave the guitar without the pickguard.

There is no such thing as your guitar being a goner if you drill into the binding. Its just a chance that the binding MAY crack hence the advise from shops/luthers before they drill it into your guitar. It just serves as a warning. No guarantee it would appear flawless.

To TS just leave the pickguard off. My hunch is that if the factory didnt install a pickguard for your guitar or provided you with the pickguard unattached there must be a reason for doing so, thus just leave it off.

But i already bought the pickguard and already drilled 1 hole at the body.. now i only left with drilling the hole for the bracket...

Ok.. and i already measured and found out that i have to drill it at the binding part.. is it ok? or i will damage the guitar?
