all about powerjam 2007!

fgl, getting to the finals should not be a problem. winning is the question. musically, you guys are there already. need something exordinary to convince the judges to give it to you. you know lah, you are competiting with more 'marketable' bands.

Soft - I have been in most of the competitions around and one thing I have learned is that we must NEVER take qualification or winning for granted. Winning is a great feeling of course but its not the end of the world if we dont - we are matured enough to know that sometimes music competitions can be very subjective.

We have prepared for our semis tonight meticulously. What's most important for Retro Groove is that we put up a good show . Anything more is a bonus...One thing is for certain, regardless of whatever happens, Powerjam 07 will be the last local competition for me. It's time for the "new jacks" to compete.

After this, we and the guys will work on my "long planned and wanted to do but never had the time because we were too busy playing at night and working in the day" album - in colaborate with Dan, Riki Hendrix and a few other musical buddies of mine. Yeah ...we got some plans up our sleeves...

Anyway James thanks for your words of advise & encouragement.

fgl wishing all bands tonight "every thing you wish yourselves in music"

visa

coz i want to highlight to fgl. not on the musically side but the other stuff that a record company would consider if a band can sell.

rultz - thanx for the HP pix...hope U liked our peformance last night.

Grimbody - didnt see u at Timbre last ngt? Were you hanging out with the Now Open guys?

The point James was making re the "marketable" statement is that record companies normally view "image and youth" as "commercially viable factors" (Malay say - BOLEH PAKAI). I used to be a record co label chief myself before I got into the airline biz and sadly, I have to agree with his statement - even if I dont agree whith the image /age thing over talent and passion. He is saying that Retro Groove lacks the youth & image hence we have to over compensate by other means. The guys in Retro Groove are overjoyed in making the finals. We hope we can put up an equally good performance on 25 July at the finals. Thanks to all our supporters who came down last night and to the crowd at Timbre who accepted our showcase warmly.

One aspect I must touch on again is the stage / house SOUND MIX. For a semi final - it was again slightly below par IMHO. I felt the auditions rounds had clearer more balance sound mixing especially for the stage mix. We could not hear ourselves both vocally as well as each other's instruments.

Any other band faced this problem?

Finallly congrats to the bands that made it Now Open - kick ass set with funky orange uniforms (the MC "kurang ajar jack u all abt yr cleaner outfit - sial lah!) Ridge and the others whom I think made it too - congrats - nice, real nice esp the Walllflowers cover. To the bands that didnt qualify (there were some surprising ommissions) ... take heart that it was quite a tough semi last ngt. I spoke to one of the DJs and he told me that most bands outside of the top 5 qualifying bands were only merely a few points apart, some by only 1 or 2 points from making the finals, but he would not reveal anything else of course. Yes it was that tough as I had expected.

I dug Diorama's set (mother & daughter outfit) and thought they did really well. Well done guys.

Anyway - see you guys at Zouk on 25 July for the finals. remember - free LEE jacket going to be tossed into the crowd - up for grabs!

Juzagurl - thanx for the sms well wishes & come 25 July confirm we have a drink lah!

Cheers 8)
