hi guys, i am new to this forum

im generally a teenager who is passionate abt music.
Loves musicals and other sorts of music like jazz, pop music, RnB ~( but no hard techno ..woo.!)
i am keen to learn music and evertaully hop to be able to compose my own songs.

Just a few questions ! pls help !

can i start learning music from a keyboard ? or synth ? (i dunno the diff) !
or shud i just get a digi.piano ??

what range or keyboards shud i get ?
i am personally attracted to the Korg triton (the ones with weighted keys)

dying to sing, craving for music ~

Hmmm do you have any music background?

Well since you're into singing , what kind of genres of music do you intend to learn?

If it's jazz then get yourself a digital piano perhaps , if it's pop/rock/metal then get yourself a keyboard/synth.

If you wanna take up music lessons , go for pop keyboard/piano lessons.

Actually a synth is just a more sophisticated version of a normal keyboard with loads of cool functions which you never find on a normal keyboard. :D

Cheers

Actually i do have a direction, as to have some grasp of modern pop music (e.g chinese industry... ).

im more of a sentimental person, but abit crazy at times though :X

as for music backgrd, during my sec school. was from choir lol. (dun laugh)
that is where i develop my sense for music

Well since you listen to Mando pop why not try taking up pop piano lessons?

I've heard some interesting piano riffs (but not solos sadly) in Mando pop from artisties like Jay Chou and JJ and bands like Shin.

That's just my suggestion but that does not always mean you have to follow whatever I say. Perhaps others can give their input into this thread as well!

Cheers

hmmm. so i guess pop piano course shud be the one im going for :)

wad about any good gears to intro ??

Any suggestions from the other viewers ???

Errrr don't ask me about keyboard gear.

Just give me any kind of keyboard/synth/piano and I'll just hantam them. I'm not really into keyboard technology.

Well pop piano course is one of the few alternatives routes you can go.

hmm.. okay thanks for the help :)

Any other users can suggest wad kybd shud i get ?

Shud i go for a KORG triton (weighted) ? or jus a digital piano ??

i think clavinova range from yamaha is too much of a price to handle for me.

and i needed some one to advise me so that i would rush myself to get a keyboard hmm

Is any of the music shops having sale soon ??

Well it all depends on what kind of music you intend to pursue.

You need to have a clear and definite path in what kind of music you wish to pursue (classical , jazz , pop , rock) first before anyone can recommend you the kind of keyboard to get.

Perhaps you could first tell us your aims and objectives in learning music? Like do you intend to learn music in a long run? Or is this just a one off shot thing like once you acquired all the necessary skills to sing and play then you stop learning more.

if you want only piano sounds get a digital piano or a normal acoustic piano.

if you want more sounds to play with look for a workstation like KORG triton, Yamaha motif , Roland fantom . of course the higher ur budget the better the sound you will get the more sounds you will get. which you might need for arranging later or to compose.

if you prefer sounds from the software den get a midi controller like M audio 88 keys? and buy some music software.

it all depends but the best is you read all on keyboard gears since ur interested in knowing how this works. after that decide on what you want and den ask for opinion of gears if ur still unsure.

:) jia you

basically my vision of myself learning music is to fulfil my anxiety of being able to sing, to sing n play at the same time and finally Being able to compose music to be called my own.

i would like to get the feeling of playing 1st, getting it right, and then play some decent pop music. hmm.. some music which i really feel like playing are some songs by Jay chou? like "feng" , with some rock backgrd like lovestory by fan yi chen, sentimental stuff like those OSTs from korean dramas : e.g princess hrs(goong) - Howl - aeng mo sae(parrot)

im also interested in how those producers make RnB (urban) music. (e.g like those songs u hear on radio . 98.7, power 98 every day, and btw their songs are always the same argh.! )

how different is a midi controller to a normal workstation ?

hi hock, welcome to SOFT.

i super advise a total beginner to get a $300 Caiso keyboard to start with. Play on it for 6 months. Take up some lessons from music school. Then decide what gears to get.

If your interest is still strong, during that 6 months, you would have exposed yourself to loads of keyboards/synthesizers/workstations/technology.

For now, no gear can help you if you can't play.

Totally agree with Soft. Don't end up getting a white elephant in your home. Try out first. Don't even think about the differences between a workstation and a midi controller as both are not for you at this stage. Focus on whether a keyboard/piano is what you want to pursue.

actually i think wad u want, is to be able to sing and play pop songs, and write your own. then i suggest u go LWS and join their composing class. they will teach u keyboard during the first few months and u will learn how to sing and play pop songs. in the later part of the yr and 2nd yr, u will focus more on composing. yea, u should try it, its totally for beginners.

but *disclaimer* i think it suks so badly for me. but i feel it would do good for u.

yeah i think i would also want some budget gears to start up with to get myself to play.

Thanks for your advises ! now i'll just need to find a decent 2nd hand budget kybd or just get one from the stores ! shall update u guys !

shall go to swee lee 1st haha, i stay just round the corner whah. can see the swee lee building from my kitchen.

cheers

i sincerely apologise for the long reply.

okay. after listening to your comments. and looking at the time. its ard 2.30 pm. in the afternoon. MY BOSS suddenly gave me a half day oh man !cos. anyway theres nothing else to do. !whaha

so i chiooong down to the city. 1st stop. luthers musicworkz~ wooo.. cool shop with great service. i was really being attended to man. although its a small shop u can really see its being stocked up pretty well. (probably aiming for the christmas season ya know) whaha . Boss and staff there recommended me as a beginner to get a yamaha PSR-e303. With touch recognition and lightedkeys to learn the build-in tunes, i was pretty impressed with it woo! [offer price <300 w/o stand, not able to give exact price as i guess its kinda sensitive.] and boss did try a few sampling tunes for me to hear, it does produce some great sounds, he said that these range of yamaha kybd produces betta sounds than the range that casio has..hmm.. okay next stop bras basar

2nd stop bras basar. Book mania was on and also quite an eye-opener for me to see quite a number of shops there selling music related stuff. Tried to find swee lee but stumble upon this shop selling sports stuff as well as music instruments (forget name le . im sorry !) i saw this brand of keyboards there its . starts with M (m sumthing). not very impressive as it seems to me leh. tried to play with it for some time dun dun give as good kick as the yamaha one. :P

Next stop. Swee lee music co. 1st time coming to the bras basar branch( lol. i just live next to the sims dr one ya know whahahahah ) Spacious, nice showcase of items. gives me the im not gonna screw u up kinda feeling but gonna get ur pockets empty ?. Objective = innova kybds. Next up, no one was there to serve this poor guy here. those sales persons were so BUSY !! run here get drum covers.. take customers go see guitars.. blablbla
Finally, was able to get some help. As they were looking at me trying to fiddle at the kybd section. was asking abt the price, turns out to be roughly at the price same as the yamaha at luthers~

but comparing both. sound wise, guess the yamaha realli deserves my attention. appearance wise, the innova has lots to catch up on. too messy for me :X

didnt managed to see and try any casio kybds.

and btwsweelee let me try the roland e-09. when i hit the 1st key. the TOUCH wooo ! oh my... totally different. and the sound. is realli. hmmm.. lol. if i have this. i can throw the others candidates away. But then i was ignored again by sales team, and i left without asking the price.

hmmm.. still not satisfied with my market survey. LOST my WAY when trying to find city music. went to a nearby cold storage. and looked up i was like wad the fick its on the 2nd floor but closed:(

i'll think i'll hit on sweelee sims dr later ~ can just do a propel to their roof. and initiate my attack. i'll update u guys abt my progress pretty soon
