A true Singapore 'underground' music compilation

Guys,

1) Have there been any compilation release recently that truly showcases Singapore music; that DOESN'T shelve itself in one genre?

I mean something that have equal balance of hip hop, electronica and rock?

2) IF such a compilation were to be planned and actualised, what would be your response? Would you care to have your band/act participate in it, even if is without the promise of getting immediate financial gains, but definite exposure to the general mass in both local AND overseas?

3) Any other criticism/suggestions as to how this can be realised?

Your thought contributions please...

Its Not just getting bands together for a CD mate ...its the whole package !
I advice you to sit ur ass down with some fellas from of diff *choices* and get some feedabck and ideas !

Work wit either a concept or a theme ...

That's what my ass is doing right now, mate. This forum is not my only resource for opinions. I'm asking this very same question over in the hip hop side of SG (With that in mind, can someone direct me to an electronica equivalent of this forum, if there is one available?).

And of course I will consider concepts and themes. I may be ignorant on certain things, but I am not a complete idiot.

With what I will eventually gather, I will think about whether or not I am capable of such a challenge, far fetched as it may be. If not, then too bad. Perhaps someone else might wanna take it up? I'll support him

;)

1) No, and it's all becuz we forgot to include hip-hop in the compilation we did for Music For Good. Our bad.

2) You have to consider the mechanics of participation. Are you forking out the recording studios fees? You mention distribution overseas. Is it confirmed? Is it guaranteed?

How long is the contributed song? Better to set a limit. Based on our previous experience, when someone tells you "Yeah, I think it's a bout 3 minutes long." It turned out to be almost 6 minutes long! And we were running dangerously past the 70 minutes mark. And we had to ask him to trim down on some parts and get the rest of the acts to edit a little here and there.

3) Start looking for sponsors for the pressing of the CD. It's not that cheap. Are you mastering the CD in S'pore? That's a consideration as well.

Thank you very much! That's what I'm talking about

Your feedback appreciated and taken into consideration. :D

Then go out and get the For Good compilation then. Gotch pop, post-rock, indie, remixes and electronica. All proceeds go straight to Music For Good. Put your money where your mouth is. :D

There were far too many peeps (and even bro SOFT bro himself) who came to this forum, promising a compilation album and all. Nothing ever materialised. I think some folks in this forum tend to get skeptical about it.

We are exploring the option of doing a sequel to last year's compilation. Same concerns as you. Donch know got money to do or not.

Got it.

Woot! Those links seriously helped. Thanks!

Yeah, AgingYouth is right. He holds the answers. Listen to him.

A problem may also be who you want to include, because there are a lot of bands out there, but not all are that good. You'll need time for auditions, plus decisions on how "fair" you want it to be across the genres: does rock get more slots than electronica?

One audio CD can only hold so much...

Still, there are many ways to skin a cat, as they say. For instance, let's say you get Apple to sponsor provided all the bands are recorded on Garage Band. Call the compilation Out Of The Garage - you have a theme going already, plus less money out of your pocket.

Anyway, that's my two cents. Can my music please be included in the compilation?

Bro christoh bro, we donch hold the answers. Just sharing some of the mistakes we made. But we noticed something. The electronica tracks sound much better in terms of clarity than the band tunes. Hmm...

Scheduling the entire project is crucial. We took 10 months to execute the entire project. We met the Music For Good peeps ard June or July 2005. We invited the bands to participate in August, stating the objective of the project and the terms and conditions. They were given till end of Jan 2006 to submit their track.

We have gotten most of the tracks in February. I think only Camra and Lunarin (thanks sis demeter sis!) submitted on time in Jan. Fucken musicians... Hahaha but we factored the fact in that everyone will submit in the tracks late. SO the real submission deadline was end Feb as we planned for the mastering to be mid March and the pressing to be early April.

The heart attack was when some bands started pulling out in January. We started looking for acts on forums, including this one. But thankfully, we managed to get one act to help. I think it was indeed the breakout track of the compilation: Stoned Revivials' 'The New Way'. They still play it at Poptart, Beat! and those other non-DJ shows.

Heh, quite loh sor, this post. But this is a project we were very proud of. Fucken hell, it makes me feel like going and do a sequel to it! Hah!
