A purist's pedalboard... Enough?

Hi all,

I'm kinda a purist. I don't like to use effects or modulations, and I play stuff ranging from rock to heavy metal. I'm starting an all-analog pedalboard (for a purist, its more worth it than getting multi-effects) and I'm wondering if this is enough:

Guitar > High-gain distortion > Overdrive > Amplifier > Cabinets (future la...)

I've never ventured into pedalboard territory until recently so really need advise so I can plan my budgets and savings, etc. I use humbucking pick-ups exclusively, into a solid state amp (I get my clean tones from the amp and tube drive tones from my pedals).

Advise? Or is it enough? Thanks!

For now I can't afford a high-gain tube amplifier, though of course I still operate by the fact no pedal can match amplifier distortion. Your recommendation is probably what I'm gonna move to in the future, but now, its almost impossible :)

Slowly take your time & explore. cannot finish 1. My advice is that try to buy pedas within your means. not by hype. Since you know the fact that pedal cant match amp dist, why dont you save the $$$ that you want a pedal for a amp? its really worth the wait.

Because I still need to get a rough estimate of the tone I want, but yeah I don't go for expensive pedals because I'll probably stop using them several years down the road when I can afford a high-gain amp.

i think u might wanna consider having a reverb or delay, cuz without them.. your guitar sounds boring.. if u are the kinda guy that likes to solo lah.

having a concert with big cabs,
but without reverb or delay, it makes u sound like playing in your bedroom with a 10 watts amp.
(maybe the concert hall already have natural reverb, but its not what u can control what)

as for those modulations effects like phaser flanger chorus wah.. i dun think u will need lah..

Dude... I've been playing for 20 years. I own 9 guitars which have an average price point of $2,500 and above. I play anything from blues to rock to pop to metal. I could have afforded a high gain amp if I wanted. (Almost went for a nice H&K).

I didn't.

I bought a vintage tone Laney VC15. And I still buy pedals...

You'll figure out why when you get older...

bro, the distorted/overdriven tones from pedals can actually get awfully close to an amp--enough that it's hard to tell the difference. i swore by a marshall dsl until i bought a foxrox zim. purist or not, it's infinitely more convenient to have "your" tone in a little box you can carry around, especially when you jam/gig

VC15 is the dope! Was top of my xmas wishlist last year but ended up with a VJ + vox cab due to financial constraints. Luckily Swee Lee BB doesn't have one in their store, or else I'll be broke the month-after, hee.

For HB guitars, I personally recommend BD-2.

my ideal dream purist board... rly depends on my needs.
i'd like: rc booster, keely compressor/barber tone press, and 2 tube screamer type pedals. one for boosting amp's drive, one more for another tonal option. no delay is needed, but a reverb from the amp yes please:)

My last & final 3pedal(boss)>Ds1,Digital dimension C & Pitchshifter Delay. It's all up 2 u to mingle ard with the amp.you comfortable with.

how much gain do ya need?? if you need rock gain, id recommend, on a budget, a TS808 into either, a Rat2, Fulltone OCD, Tubezone. and id still say delay AT LEAST. still can dial in almost reverb sound. buuuuut... then again i love modulation and love at least a phaser. but thats me.

Whahahaha... how's the Vox cab? what size? What's a VJ?

For the life of me, I can't understand something though... What's the differences in circuitry between the VC15 and the LC15? Both have the same reverb, though the VC's sounds weaker, which is fine. Both use the same tubes, and have the same power ratings, yet they both sound totally different... I just can't figure it out.
