it really isn't necessary and most of the time it's a matter of ego like wow I can shred faster than you wow can you do this sweep like I can? and it sounds stupid most of the time. there are times when it is apt in a song but most of the time it just sounds self-indulgent and silly. unless you're talking about metal, of course. then it is totally apt

I can shred but I struggle with trying to retain any sense of uniqueness in my playing then.

You open up youtube and realise hundreds of other guitarists can do the same thing, probably better/skill-er, but they all sound the same.

Shred is one easy way to impress people though.

Shred is one easy way to bore those in the know though.

Tough to shred with flair... and character.

i would prefer though, if pple could use shredding when needed and not for the seek of shredding. incooperating it here and there in between the lead lines, imo, would be better than just shredding throughout the whole song.

for me i can't shred and i'm nt interested in learning it, haha. ( seems funny since half of wat i listen to contains shredding)

I like shredding. It makes it really fun to simply sit back, and play fast and technical without having to think about what to play next. Just throw in whatever technique you know. That's the impressive bits. Being able to use almost every technique known to man. Whether it's useful in the music I play or not, is irrelevant. It's more about being able to do it rather than wanting to do it.

I respect guitarists with good shredding techniques, because it shows how much hardwork they've put in practising their playing. Me not liking shred is actually just an excuse for myself being lazy. Heh... I wish I could.

When i see people like Shredcow doo it so effortlessly, it sorta makes me think I'm wasting my time learning guitar. heh...

i'm noob at shredding too, but one fact hindering me from going all out and practicing hard is that it does seem bland when all you do is go fast, look impressive.
shredcow, or anyone else, do you know any non-metal bands that do shred tastefully? Helpful if any band names or youtube links can be given here. Perhaps they'd be better inspiration.

You play the guitar, you don't shred the guitar. Shredding is for papers. Xerox or HP can do a better job.

(there, I always wanted to say that) :D

for one, you can try metalcore / post hardcore bands, =]=] they aren't metal, haha.

ok, jokes aside, i think only metal bands/ metal influenced bands have shredding stuff in their music. but not all metal bands shred though, haha.

Check out instrumental rock guitarists such as Steve Vai, Kiko Loureiro, Marty Friedman, paul gilbert...etc.

A few jazz fusion guitarists also incorporates some rock guitar techniques like sweep picking and shredding. Check out greg howe and frank gambale.

Here's some tasteful semi-shredding by jazz fusion guitarist Greg howe!

woah, that opened up my views on shredding, but i thought marty friedman and paul gilbert were both metallist?

my personal opinion: stare at them shredders, feeling impressed by them for that moment because they have achieved something technical. Then disappear.
Honestly not a big fan of shredding, though it can really impress the people. I am more impressed by jazz players. They can bust some of nicest solos. It really takes a lot of "feel" to play a good jazz piece. I for one feel its more musical than shredding.

I can shred, but sweep-picking is still an impossibility for me. Personally, although I play stuff from blues to pop to rock to black metal, I don't really like to shred... I prefer to put feeling into it, rather than just speed.

Just not really a speed-type person...
