A Cool Guitar With a WHAMMY BAR!

A lot of misinformation here.

For starters, the Ibanez Edge (the original version, which is now on the 2010 Ibanez Signature models) is one of the best licensed floyd rose trems around. Surpassing the OFR in quality and perhaps even in sustain (given the larger mass).

Next, the world does not revolve around the OFR. There are other equally stable trems around... alas, the OFR has seen better days and suffers from poor quality control today. The Gotoh floyd rose kills the OFR in terms of quality, price and functionality. It has the best trem arm assembly out there - absolutely no wobble and has adjustable torque.

Whichever the trem chosen, the key is to get a STABLE trem that WORKS. That's it.

Can't agree anymore.
handphone, I'm quite sure they have stable tremolos, you can check out the reviews online, or best go try it out.
Btw the 2400 looks killer eh?? Haha actually wanted to get that during the SL sale, but decided to resist till the EOY LOL.

haha yea, 2400 is dam cool looking.. you sure it will have discount in SL? i thought it is placed in the glass panel there (where all the high class guitars are:) )

Hi!

If you're keen on the fast playing neck of Ibanez Guitars and you want a killer tremolo with a bang for your buck. Check out the Ibanez S420. It's a good versatile guitar. It's trem is one of the best that I've tried so far and IMO, I think it's slightly better compared to FR trem. But that's my preference. Dive-bombs, flutters come easy with the ZR trem. I don't think there're any available in Singapore but u can always order in from BGW guitars. If i'm not wrong the price will be 900+ or under a thousand.

The specs are all here:
http://www.ibanez.com/ElectricGuitars/model-S420

And you can order from here:
www.bgwguitars.com

No 2nd thoughts for me if I were to get another guitar fitted with a locking trem with unlimited versatility, It'd be the one of these S-series from Ibanez. It gives u the best of many worlds.

Check it out! you might just like it.

wow, thats one cool serious guitar over there, but i suppose i can't try it out since it isnt available in Singapore right?

anyway, what do i need to look out for for a tremolo bridge guitar?
like, whether the bridge is shaky? :P or sth?
i mean that how do i test whether it is good?

Haha there was a discount for it during the sale. The price was cut like by 500?? Though SL's original prices are never accurate haha. Yeah it was in the fender room right?

How to test? Simple. Go into the shop, pick up the guitar, check the tuning. Once its tuned, go and wank the whammy bar like crazy, divebomb and pullup on the strings like mad. Then test the tuning after about 30secs of abuse. If it stays in tune, not too bad. If it goes out of tune, its probably not somethng you'll want. Repeat this fo about 5-8 times. If after 8 times you've abused the whammy and the guitar's still in tune, that's one hell of a bridge you've got there. Of course, if you do that at Swee Lee, they're probably gonna massacre you. Other things to take note of when testingthe trem: how smooth it feels whe whammying, does the trem bar slip in and out of the hole, and so on. Oh and don't get carried away, you don't want to be breaking a string.

After a few years of using floyd rose guitars and doing lots of trading, here are my thoughts on them

1) ibanez edge is not inferior to original floyd. Only issue is when u need to change or replace parts. They are more expensive and harder to acquire.

2) If you're willing to spend the cash on a gd floyd rose guitar, make sure u spend the effort to learn how to set up/change strings properly on the bridge. Not doing so can mess up the bridge and the guitar.

3)Avoid buying 2nd hand unless u trust or know the seller. Lots of people sell theirs cause they don't know how to use. Theres a tendency for many beginners to over tighten the string locks at the bridge area. This can cause premature wearing of the string locks/blocks/retainers(sorry don't know the actual name). Im in the process of changing the saddles of one guitar cause this happened to a piece that i just acquired.

If by this point the floyd sounds like a lot of trouble, the truth is that it actually is. If you're not willing to learn a bit of the technical( hardware maintenance) side of guitar, it might be better for you to avoid the floyd altogether. But if you're willing to overcome that, the floyd offers lots of benefits. Just tune the guitar once and the tuning won't run for weeks. Using the whammy bar with confidence, without worrying whether itll go out of tune etc...

hi there..
i really learnt alot just by reading your thread.
but i wanna know, if my string broke and i want to restring my guitar, do i have to bring it to a shop to restring it?
or will it be difficult for myself to restring it?

No love for Fender Strats? Cool, guitar, whammy bar, floating. Add in another: Simple! Perhaps a Jeff Beck Signature? Just look at his vids with one :). Different from a FR definitely, but IMO it works. Have fun!

Can't remember any production Strat that comes with any form of the FR bridge or even a Wilkinson........almost all strats have the vintage trem if i'm not wrong........... So, no, a normal strat with the typical vintage trem will not give you the same type of dive bomb-ability as an FR.

well there are always other brands like g&l which spot wilkinsons or musicman (if u can afford). petrucci dives with his musicman and i dun think he goes very far out of tune...

An interesting point to note about Ibanez Tremolo bridge is

1. An EDGE is not inferior to the OFR in anyway.
2. There are a lot of Manifestation of Ibanez Edge out there. (Edge, Edge II, Edge III, Edge Pro, Lo-Pro Edge, Edge-Zero.
3. People usually condemn an Ibanez Edge bridge when they tried a lesser manifestation of the Original Edge and claimed that they have tried the EDGE.

One BIG point to note is, Edge/Lo-Pro is no longer available in the current batch of Ibanez Guitar (Save the signature models, which are reissues of the Edge and are as good as the Original ones).
If you can still get an Ibanez with the Edge, Edge-Pro or Lo-Pro, my advice is.. GO FOR IT.

Now, all that being said, I am not saying that the lesser manifestation of the Edge are bad, they are just not as good as the original one. However, most of the time, it's the player that doesn't know how to set up the Tremolo that's causing the problem, not the hardware itself.
