4-string or 5 string

hi, im gonna try and learn bass. Im wondering if any bassist can help me it out. Should i start with or 4-string bass or can a 5-string bass?

I think there are different techniques(read somewhere) to the 2 types of basses. Could any1 advise me on which to choose?

Thank you

imo, better to start with a 4-string. if you have solid music theory, you can try the 5-string, but if you play by tabs like me, go with 4.

different techniques for 4 and 5 stringers? don't think so, both are played the same way.

most songs are tabbed out for 4-string basses, so if you have a 5-stringer, you'll have to learn how to "convert" those so that you can play them on a 5-stringer. hard to explain, maybe those playing 5-stringers can elaborate, haha.

actually 5 string bass are mostly for bassist who like to use pop and slap technic..shd i say more advance bass player who remember the whole fret board in a 4 string...is actualli better to go for the 4string at the start...dun go for 5 string..is hard to play and slightly more heavier in the weight..=)

hmm, I think it depends on the music/bands that you like. If they often have basslines which uses the low B, it might be better to get a 5string straight. It might be harder to play, but I think its worth it.

I'm regretting of not getting a 5 string at first. Now I have to scrimp and save again to get another bass before I can play my favorite songs

the play style of the 5 string is very different from that of the 4 string although the 5 string bass just gives you an extra 5 notes. ( Eb D Db C B)

if you feel that you can manage the weigh of the 5 string and think that your hands are big enough, go for the 5 string by all means.

regarding the tabbing and music theory, both 4 and 5 string would require theory and all that to master it, so why not go for the 5 string?

that's imo.

if given the choice, get both.
and tune them to different tunings. =]=]

hmm i guess when u break it down like that, i have no choice but to choose a 4-sting bass...my hands are pretty small for a 16 yr old...

What bass do you recommend i get? i've been reading tru threads, and alot of people suggested sx bass. If i do not want to get the sx starter pack, where else can i get sx basses?

i'm a 16 year old too.

but don't worry about the hand not being big enough part.

don't give up the thought about not buying a 5 stringer just because your hands aren't big enough

you'll get used to it.
i'm in the midst of saving up for a 5 string bass too ( i think it'll probably take years before i can actually buy it though)

as for the bass recommendation, i'll stick to my choice of cort basses.
sx jazz basses aren't bad at all but if you can save up more and wait for the sweelee sale, the cort basses there are very decent.

but it boils down to what sort of bass are you looking for.
one that's practical for performing or one that's versatile.

ok will do. Thanks.

Do davis respond to emails? or do u have to call em? im not really good at talking...

haha, i'm nt that good at talking too.

why not just pop down?
there's lyk tons of shops at peninsula plaza.
just make sure you do your homework before buying any guitar. ( or even considering buying any)

if not, scout the 2nd hand market for one.

what's your budget btw?
300?

!!!

that's quite a big budget.

my advice is to save up more. ( till like around 900 like that)

then wait for sweelee sale, then go there buy bass and a decent amp.
that way u can save up qutie a lot and still get a mid range bass.

but be sure to choose ur amp wisely.
i'm stuck with an amp that i don't really like for now.
haha

$750? that's alot.

save up more and get a cheap second hand MIM Fender. not too sure about amps though. maybe a peavy might be fine.

1. 4 string or 5 string

4 string standard tuning ( E A D G )
5 string standard tuning ( B E A D G )

there is only one difference (aside from physical differences) between 4 and 5 stringers - 5 stringers give you lower notes. there is no difference in transposition between 4 and 5 stringers that is a result of the presence of the low B. transposition usually is only an issue on instruments with different tunings. different tunings will cause this issue regardless of the number of strings the bass has.

now, for me, having access to lower notes is not a good enough reason for one to get a 5 stringer. it's like saying the main benefit from a 6 stringer is being able to play lower and higher notes due to the low B and high C strings. that is not the case.

the most important reason for having extra strings would be to have a wider tonal range without having to go up and down the neck. and when would one need a wider tonal range? in 2 cases - (1) for playing chords and (2) for soloing.

2. brand new or used, cheapo or high end

there have been alot of grandfather stories and conspiracy theories regarding low end basses, and basses made in certain countries. as such, i will put it in this way:

basses made in certain countries are less preferred by players because they usually have a greater variance in their quality. meaning to say, it is more common to come across a lousy china made instrument than an american made instrument.

with this in mind it is harder for an inexperienced player to identify which basses are lemons and which are gems.

this is reason why a 'good bass' can last longer than a poorly made ones. also bear in mind that some very experienced guitarists in these forums are champions of basses that many would consider obscure or cheapo. i'm not trying to undermine their expertise, but it is also worth noting that often the instruments that they speak very highly of have probably not been owned by them for long periods.

so far i have explained why a used bass would still have alot of value, and you already know that it's easier on your wallet. there is another reason why you should get used;

get a used bass, learn how to take care of it. it's less of a heartache if a used bass gets a ding or a scratch due to your inexperience

Thx guys, didn think i wud get so much response.

@shinobi, erm for a second hand bass, what do you tihnk would be suitable for me? im only just starting to venture into bass. pls give me more advice.

@KeDraiv, so what bass amp is good in your opinion?

Ibanez might be a good choice for you. Since you have smaller hands, their renowned slim necks should fit you fine. =)

With your budget, wait for the sweelee sale, and it wouldnt be hard to get a mid-range ibanez.

Did i mention that that they are relatively light too?

Just my 2 cents. :)
