Hi all, I am in need of some opinions regarding an issue i am facing.
Currently i am in possession of a Yamaha DTXExpress IV and i play it using an earpiece.
However i have decided to get a speaker/amplifier/monitor but am unsure of which is better.

Basically i only practice at home and do not need high powered speakers/amplifiers.
I went to Yamaha and the salesperson advised me on their MS40DR drum monitor that is a 2.1 system.
20W on each speakers and 40W on the sub woofer. Retailing at $391

However the same salesman did tell me that for a cheaper alternative, i can go for computer speakers with
similar specs.

Hence requiring some opinions from anyone out there that has knowledge on these kind of equipments.
My main concern is that if i were to buy computer speakers, will it be feasible over time?

Yes u can use computer speaker. But must be very careful with the power output. Anything lower than 40W and the sound will be distorted, especially the base. I m using computer speaker ( subwoofer with 2 satelite ) n sounds as good as MS 40DR. Hope this helps.

hi bro, can you give us what brand of speaker and model you are using right now, coz im planning to buy too.. so computer speaker with subwofer is ok?

I dont think computer speaker can sound as good as a drum monitor. Drum Monitor has a large cabinet Bass Reflex SubWoofer Driver for the kick-drum which is heavy and many times larger than a computer bass driver plus a pair of high quality stereo studio monitor (about the size of a 3" studio monitor). I am referring to MS50R, although only 50Watts it deliver better clarify and big punch compares to a 100W or 300W keyboard amplifier. It also sounds better than a SGD$ 300 Headphone. Drum monitor is tuned correctly for a drum kit and it also sounds great if you feed MP3 play along to your ed-rum trigger unit.

For computer speakers 5:1 and 2:1 the bass is terrible, the snarl and cymbals sounds fake. Nothing sounds right. You have to change the drum voice kit to one that that least irritate you. DTX (or any of the Yamaha edrum)

Use a computer speaker only if you happens to have one sitting at home and do not wants to spend money. But if you have to buy one, gets a drum monitor. Drum Monitor must have bass cabinet and a pair of seperate studio monitor, . MS40 is the minimum you should goes. Nowaday Drum Monitor price is quite cheap you can check out prices at luthermusic or SVguitar or MusicGear.

Hi bro. I m using Edifier S330 D on my Yamaha dtxpress 4. Bass and treble are supperb. No distortion. It even shook my room even when I turn the volume just halfway. So it is perfect if u wanna practice indoor. But if u r playing gigs on stage I recommend u to connect ur edrums to Amp or PA system. I m not sure how much its retail price but I got mine at ebay for just $90.
