1)Buy PRS guitars

3)Buy Epiphone guitars
4)Buy BOSS pedals
5)Buy Marshall Amps
6)Buy Peavey Amps
7)Use Ernie Ball Strings
8)Change Pickups to Dimarzio or Seymour Duncan
9)Buy some gear because some popular artist endorse them even if the product is obviously not to my liking.
10)Be a gear snob

Actually reason 10 cover all the other reasons already.

I guess you are just making a statement here. No-one is stopping you.

I agree with mikey, no. 10 covers them all!

Number 8... What pup brand do you like? I like this Kent Armstrong's humbucker called the Motherbucker solely because of its name!!! LOL!

well~ just personal taste. i believe everyone have gears in their mind that they avoid like plague. Just happened that many ppl will not like what i post here as what i dislike happened to be popular among the majority. But as i said, personal preferences... personal.

1)Buy PRS guitars ---> overpriced? unnecessary cosmetics just adds to the price not sound.

2)Buy Gibson guitars ---> too much hype

3)Buy Epiphone guitars ---> ?? just doesn't appeal to me

4)Buy BOSS pedals ---> too digital

5)Buy Marshall Amps ---> overrated

6)Buy Peavey Amps ---> ?? just don't appeal to me

7)Use Ernie Ball Strings ---> wears out fast.

8)Change Pickups to Dimarzio or Seymour Duncan ---> destroy original characteristic of the guitar.

9)Buy some gear because some popular artist endorse them even if the product is obviously not to my liking. ---> obviously

10)Be a gear snob ---> buy with ears, not because... well... point no.9 and above

dun hate me. just my personal opinions. I'm just too anti-majority

stock PickUps! no reason to buy the guitar if u don't like the pickup. i mean how is it possible to think that " fixing a Duncan JB into my guitar will sound great!" when obviously u won't know the result till it's fix??

don't mind me saying, but in time, you're prob gonna look back and go "WTF was i thinking??"

probably... when all the BOSS, MARSHALL, GIBSON, PRS etc. lovers starts to hamtam me with their hot flaming replies. hmm... but i'm just stating what i feel... are ppl going to condemn me because i just happened to hate what the majority loves?

haha I have met a match!!! Who's the biggest anti-conformist in the town?

Lol, j/king lah... Hmm... I disagree with 8, because pups originally don't create tone, they shape it... A lotta ppl think that slapping in new pups will work wonders when it doesn't... And there are relatively neutral pups offered by these brands...

Like what Mr PRS (I hate the company, not the man) has said, an electric guitar's unplugged acoustic sound is the ultimate acid test for tone. It takes years of experience to be able to identify the tone from different wood, makes etc.

Seymour Duncan has been praised by traditionalists, while Dimarzios are embraced by the new modern rock/metal guys. I personally am neutral on these 2 brands.

well ok i'm not that big a fan of PRS because soundwise it just doesn't do much for me, and i think BOSS pedals are too digital too, and the only one i'll ever use personally is the tuner.

i like Pre JCM2000 series marshalls, the ones that were still made in the UK. these include the VS (Valvestate...replaced by the M series) series, JCM900s, JCM800s, JTM30s, etc. they're all good amps, and worth getting.

Gibson's quality control was kinda hit or miss for a while and they still put out a few lemons here and there but i think for the most part they're doing a decent job now. their guitars are expensive, but they're tough and hold up under abuse. you also have to remember the price is marked up a LOT in singapore.

and yeah, i fairly detest Dimarzio and SD pickups. well...except Dimarzio's PAF Pros, those are pretty amazing. but generally speaking, i'd rather get a Gibson Burstbucker pickup any day for humbucking work.

i don't really hate Dimarzio or Duncans actually. If the guitar comes stock with em. It's fine actually. :D just that i don't understand why ppl want to change pickup. the same pickup e.g duncan JB will probably sound different when fitted on say 3 different guitars. and scary part is u'll never know the outcome till it's fixed! it just sounds weird when ppl say, 'for this tone, that tone, this that pickup is the choice.'

i guess the pickups work hand in hand with the woods. i mean, if i put a burstbucker on a les paul, an sg and a jem, it'd sound completely different on each one because the burstbucker is a pretty transparent pickup. which is a good thing! it's doing it's job, translating the natural resonance of the guitar into a pretty uncolored signal to send to the amp.

so that's why i like burstbucker pickups. nicely balanced and transparent sound. i wouldn't recommend them to everyone, but they generally sound good when combined with a good guitar to start with.

and this is kinda the trademark of what's regarded usually as good equipment. good amps, good pedals, good pickups, good cables, they're usually regarded as being good when they're transparent, because they don't color the natural sound of your guitar, which is the biggest influence on your sound, second only perhaps to your amplifier.

well lemon ... as you've said ... it's a matter of preference. I changed my fender strat pick up to Semour Duncan little 59.

Reason #1: I like the warm vintage sound of the single coil sized humbucks.

Reason #2: I need a pair of pickups that doesn't give me feedback when i am near the amp. I'm not talking about the cool feedback dist sound from Steve vai ... it's the irritating Hum you hear when you know that it's the Alnico that completes the loop.

Some people like it bright ... some like it warm. Some blues players like Robert Cray and Eric Clapton uses a fairly bright tone maple necks. Some like it darker and warmer .... heavier ... like Stevie. Larry Carlton is a master of all tones ... he is everything!

For me ... maybe you can call me a poor man who couldn't afford expensive guitars .... so the only way to get what i want is to change pick ups. I have to work ... study ... pay household bills ... pay home loan ... no $$ lah bro ... how to afford a few thousand dollars Fender Deluxe strat?

I dont really think replacing the pups would "destroy" the characteristics of the guitar rather it brings out a different side of the guitar.

Its definately a trial and error process though...

IMO of course.

As you've stated Lemoned, it's just cause you don't like it :)

Anyway, my take on this is if you think changing of pups destroys the original characteristic of the guitar. Then you should own all analog pedals with true bypass, plug in straight to a PA. Then again there isn't a speaker in this world which is truly transparent. So your tone is still altered by your equipment isn't it?

Just my 2c

Mew ---> maybe the word 'destroy' is a wrong choice. my bad. i should have used 'changed'. bring out different side of guitar... yup... definately, but the guitar loses it's original character as per it was built?

imagine retro-fitting Dimarzios into Rickenbackers, Gretsch or danelectro. 8O These guitars would lose it's original characteristics.

experiement ... that's when we can improve ... some people like original ... some people like more colours ... some people like raw ... it's really up to preference .... something that does not grow is dead.

Mew ---> .
yea it does lose its orginal character, however im one of those that tend to not be satisfied with the original pickups most of the time. In fact my strat doesnt even sound exactly like a strat anymore although the strat "quack" is still there.

Juz my 0.2 cents
