Starting a Label...

Hi Everyone,

I'm a musician hailing from Pakistan and I was looking at the feasibility of starting a label here. My prime objective is to release piracy-free CDs of bands in South Asia - which is a growing market as well as try and set up a promotions/management channel. Any thoughts opinions?

Thanks

Sounds interesting...

...even though i am not sure about the process leading to starting a label, however, you are right about the fact that south asia has many emerging bands at the moment. So you will have a lot to work with the moment you get into business. In any case, if you are looking to sign bands or solo singers in the future, I'd love to come by and audition. My name is Neil Sharma (18), and I have been singing solo for a while now. I am currently in the U.S, however will be moving to Singapore in a weeks time. I am pretty open to genres and can sing in both english and hindi (preference for english though).

Thanks again

Clarity

Sorry... maybe I should elaborate. Piracy is very common in developing countries. Especially places like pakistan India. Pirated CDs are sold in retail stores openly. Singapore has a more stringent system on containing it and outlets such as HMV are the right channels. What I want Ideally is to be able to have a platform to sell pakistani bands CDs here, hence I am interested in a label. Apart from retail, the label will be representing the artist in terms of Gigs etc.

rashiki i would start by finding out what is the demand for pakistani music here in singapore.

i know that registering a buisness here in singapore is relatively easy, regarding specificaly a label you will have to find out more info from http://www.compass.org.sg regarding the copyright laws etc..

- and another forum with a lot of info about starting a buisness, moving to singapore can be found here: http://forum.singaporeexpats.com/forum15.html
and here: http://www.expatsingapore.com/forum/index.php?board=8.0

Useful

Gideon,

Thanks for the info. I already know about the incorporation of a business, however the compass website is pretty useful. It is true that the demand for Pakistani/indian music needs to be assessed. Any suggestions. i know there's a large expat community (relatively speaking) here who would buy CDs and come to concerts but I;'m not sure how receptive the singapore market would be. Any suggestions? Survey Monkey?
