During the days when I was working at recording studios, I have many times been put into situations where I had to finish a track in one sitting due to tight schedules. This has kinda conditioned my mind in some ways.
I feel that it is a good practice to at least finish off a full rough arrangement first and polish it up another day. At least you have a skeleton track to listen to while you consider what new instruments to add or remove, what effects to put in, or what to EQ and compress.
If you tried to do a draft track a night, you might end up with 30 tracks a month, of which 20 might be nonsense, 5 potential ones and 5 that actually get to see the light of day. By the end of the year, you would have enough material to release albums.
And so this is just an example of my a-track-a-night exercises, mostly done within 3 to 5 hours since that's all the time I got after work these days. I'll probably leave it for a week or more before returning to work on it. In the meantime, I would continue doing draft tracks every night or so, IF I don't get lazy.
Enjoy.
