I have always considered EMGs fairly 1 trick: Hi-gain or nothing (Zakk and Metallica). BTW - How does Lukathur do it??
Well I put in a 60A (alnico) in the bridge (so what if they say it's a rhythm pup!) of my project ash strat guitar and wow! This is the most versitile of the EMG "humbuckers".
It's much lower output than the 85
It will not have the hi-gain scoop of the 81
It gets close to the the tone of a 85
You can rock and get metal like a 85, but you need to drive it or turn up the gain but it will clean up so much better than the 85/81. It like a low output type of pup in the sense you can use the sound and add color to it instead of the pickup dominating your sound a la ToneZone. Excellent choice for SSH set ups.
Worth considering if you are the type of player than does not require everything at "10".
