Dweezil Zappa: Go With What You Know

Dweezil Zappa, son of the late Frank Zappa, certainly went with what he knew. This is Dweezil’s sophomore instrumental release following the previous ‘Automatic’. Unlike the personal adventure displayed in the said prior release, Go With What You Know is an amalgamation of electronics brewery & self-discovery.

There was no obligation for the son of Frank to churn out an all-guitar release hence the vocal laden opener, Love Ride. Majority of the tracks here are programme intensive (think Satch’s Engine of Creation) but done very tastefully to entice the shredders & recording indulgent alike. Being the prolific player he is, Dweezil’s invitational sparring partners, Blues Saraceno & TJ Helmerich, successfully brought out the shredder in him while proceedings remain very musical & not excessively technical.

Paying tribute to his extrovert father, Frank Zappa’s ‘Peaches En Regalia’ & a previously unreleased alternate edition of ‘Hot Rats’ are included. As opposed to a complete remake, the former track features Dweezil’s overdubs; playing in unison as well as additional inserts.

All in all, Go With… is a worthy listening experience, certainly a one-up offering with reference to Automatic.
