Your Favourite Vocalist - Got Video Better =D

The Vocalist Of Virgin Black =D

That's not the best video to pick .. it's a live recording with bad audio quality. It doesn't really demonstrate how he can sing.

Sage, I had a listen to Floor Jansen .. her style is a bit too classical for me. Her vibrato is quite wide and she uses it on nearly every note.

Actually, further on in the video she gets better. At around 1:16 her voice starts sounding more natural. Up until that point she has the "bad opera" sound that I mentioned in the other thread. I much prefer the natural sound.

And she was pitchy more times than I can count - ok, I actually gave up counting after the first few lines. Quite a poor singer IMHO. There are probably a few hundred classically trained, or otherwise, singers that have a better tone and can sing better than her.

C'mon dudette! You can do beter than that! Just because she sang with, was that a Metalickher guitarist?, ??? Eeewwww!

Jeddd, Jeddd Jedddddd, twang twant twang. Jeddd, Jeddd Jedddddd. METALLICA!!! Hooooo. Haaaaaaaahhh. Jeddd, Jeddd Jedddddd!!! Twang twang twang. JEDDD. JEDD JEDD JEDDdddddddddddd.

what the hahaha

btherl / Rork> LOL!!! Wow, I thought only the locals were at mercy of remarks like that. Think it's a Singaporean thing.

I had no comments on her pitchings, style, or use of vibrato. Or genre. It isn't polite to comment on someone's taste of music, and
I specifically mentioned a particular element I liked about Floor Jansen's voice, if you guys missed that.

... If I do recall, this is a 'favourite vocalist' thread, not 'best vocalist'. :)
And with that~
I'm sorry my taste isn't to your liking guys, but on a personal note, practicing on her style has been very useful, especially in triggering my open-throats and other things.
You might say she was a useful part of developing my voice; yes, the same one you 'sayang', Rork. You might want to think about that the next time you have something to diss on my favourite vocalists, which are most usually my influences :)

I'm quite surprised I had to explain that.

It's unfortunate that most people require to seek a 'perfect vocalist' to 'replicate' rather than hear the strengths on each voice and learn from there. You sing what you hear, and no vocalist is perfect. It helps to know how to pick what you want to learn, or you'll end up sounding like the next [insert vocalist], or at least trying to sound like him/her; where's the use of developing your own voice then?

With that, next vocalist; Janis Joplin

Blues singer. YES I know she's not the best blues singer out there, etc etc whatever you think but there's a reason why the vocalist from the mamas & papas is sitting there front row with her jaw dropped.

ps. btherl: It's quite a pity you're quick to dismiss certain styles as 'classical', because the basics of classical voice aren't in its tone or style (which is developed as one learn arias). It is their techniques. And yes, these techniques are the same ones you learn in every clean-vocal genre. Where do you think those singing from diaps, breath control etc ideas came from?
You want the best way to understand and optimize the use of breath and diaph, and to hit those higher notes with ease? Get a classical vocal teacher. SLS alone or whatever pop vocal teaching alone won't cut it. You'll be surprised how effortless it is to sing, combined with your understanding of SLS, and you'll realise it strengthens your voice and doesn't limit it. And no, you won't sound 'classical', I can bet on that!

This is a great thread! My fav vocalist of all time is quite undoubtedly Bono from U2!

This one's from their Rattle And Hum film, a great version of With Or Without You. He starts off with a smooth baritone before nailing some awesome high notes later on.

Dey sis, I was dissing her performance. I doubt that I anyone would have expected me to diss her talent based on one performance. She started very poorly although she was ok as the performance progressed.

Maybe a better performance from her would have been preferred. And thanks for the insight into singing etc but she still sounds very classical-ish to RoRK. Could be her tone or her style - donch know.

Ok sage, I get that you like Floor :) I will say no more.

Regarding the idea of "classical", the reason I use that term is because the worst singers I've heard have been alleged classical singers. Some of them are just awful, yet there they are on stage getting paid to warble. I never understood that. They simply wouldn't survive in the pop world, where you have to be able to move your audience with your singing.

As for techniques, I usually think of classical singing as being "breath control" singing. But SLS is "vocal cord control" singing. That's the distinction in my mind. I see classical technique as focused on controlling your breath (which indirectly affects your vocal cords), and SLS technique as focused on controlling your vocal cords (which indirectly affects your breath).

I do realize that SLS is based on Bel Canto, which is a classical method. But details on Bel Canto are sketchy, so I don't know how much of a resemblance there is.
