Hi fellow drummers,
I did a search and didn't seem to find a thread like this, so I thought I'd start one here.
Essentially the purpose of this thread is to share with each other our favourite drum solos that have really inspired us and made a lasting musical or technical impression, regardless of music genre.
Being a jazz / fusion lover, I have two favourite drum solos are from this genre, and both are played by the great drummer, Steve Gadd.
1) YouTube - Steve Gadd - Take the A train
Here, Gadd solos to the tune "Take the A train" somewhere in the middle of the clip. Personally, I think that the way he conveys so much groove and feel with so little notes is beautiful. Also, I think he builds the solo really musically and I enjoy the way he made his solo really sound like a train.
2) YouTube - Steve Gadd Solo 1992 München
Another great solo by Mr Gadd to the tune "500 miles high". Super groovy and with plenty of feel. Notice the odd phrasings and accents that he plays against the piano vamp which gives the illusion of weaving in and out of time, when in fact, he stays on time throughout. Very tasty and interesting.
