Your favourite drum solo

Hi fellow drummers,

I did a search and didn't seem to find a thread like this, so I thought I'd start one here.

Essentially the purpose of this thread is to share with each other our favourite drum solos that have really inspired us and made a lasting musical or technical impression, regardless of music genre.

Being a jazz / fusion lover, I have two favourite drum solos are from this genre, and both are played by the great drummer, Steve Gadd.

1) YouTube - Steve Gadd - Take the A train

Here, Gadd solos to the tune "Take the A train" somewhere in the middle of the clip. Personally, I think that the way he conveys so much groove and feel with so little notes is beautiful. Also, I think he builds the solo really musically and I enjoy the way he made his solo really sound like a train.

2) YouTube - Steve Gadd Solo 1992 München

Another great solo by Mr Gadd to the tune "500 miles high". Super groovy and with plenty of feel. Notice the odd phrasings and accents that he plays against the piano vamp which gives the illusion of weaving in and out of time, when in fact, he stays on time throughout. Very tasty and interesting.

not really a drum solo, but the 'amen break' has been the most influential for me.

a track called "UNDER A RAGING MOON" as recorded by Roger Daltrey ; It was a studio recording in tribute to the Who's original drummer Keith Moon - 7 diffirent drummers contributed to a long massive solo all within the scope of the song.

Joel Rosenblatt - Spyro Gyra, Akira Jimbo - Nettai Tropical Jazz Band and many more..

hahah i have alot of favourites though. dont mind me sharing them here hehehe

Firstly, well, i'd listened to this band for quite sometime...they having a new drummer for their current band, joel was with spyro gyra during this festival...the intro to the song is seductively groovy hee...so created many musical and technical inspiration for me hehehe...even the saxophonist is groovy and sexy wahahaha...they gave a lot of inspiration in my drumming even if they are not playing the drums....

YouTube - Spyro Gyra - Joel Rosenblatt - Para ti Latino

not only the drumming is good. the chemistry within the band is tight and influential...woohooo...

Secondly, there's akira jimbo. in this vid he played with the Nettai Tropical Jazz Big Band. Tight and sexy hahaha...cos i've been researching on big band drumming, so fell upon them when doing my inspirational research...nice...akira did his trademark solo in the middle of the song...he did a little bit of talking with the conga dude (listen out for it)...anyway besides the drums i think the piano intro is sweeeeeet....the bassist hair is funky hahaha...

Next, i'm gonna share with you one of the legendary bebop innovator; Max Roach. Well, i heard alot of critics saying that he's playing is not in time, all over the place blah blah blah...but i think they fail to see that he's inducing melodic lines into drumming itself. A solo is still a solo yea...hahah well here is one of his clips i sought after when i need melodic inspiration...

YouTube - Max roach-Drum Waltz

On with the list. Steve Smith. His Journey from the band JOURNEY to being an influential in the jazz/fusion scene has made alot of buzz abt him. Currently, i'm listening to his styles of play. Technical and melodic wise. From his old records to his current ones. Simply love to hear his grooves from behind the set...i have two vids of him...personally the 2nd vid is WOW!!!

YouTube - Steve Smith - Independence/Interdependence

This next one i'm gonna share is one of my fav jazz solos...Jeff Hamilton soloing and swinging with the tunes, melodically swingy baby...!!!

YouTube - Jeff Hamilton Solo

Lastly, to end this entry. (sorry for taking too long hehehe) Horacio Hernandez with his subtle melodies in this Groovy latinish solo...

YouTube - Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez - Rumbateria

These are a few of my fav. I listen to almost any genre of music. Not only listening to the drums but also the melodic lines and tunes that the band plays. gives more ideas and colours to my drumming.

hope ya enjoy...
