Yet another guitar shielding thread (Component hunt)

Hi all,
I decided that I'd try to shield my Cort 250g (HSS). I've read most of the threads on this forum relating to the 'Shielding the Beast' article on guitarnuts, but I'm not sure where to get the required tools/components. It'd be neat if you could list out shops where you bought most of these items to perform this mod.

--------------------

*Desoldering pump or bulb.

*Small crescent wrench or hollow-shaft nutdriver that fits the mounting nuts on your control pots - I'm not quite sure what this means - could someone explain please?

* Heat gun (optional) - is this really useful?

----------------------------

* Resin-core electrical solder. Paste flux is also nice to have around for that occasional component lead that just won't take solder.

* Desoldering braid.
About 1' of "audio" cable which has two insulated conductors inside a single shield.

* A few feet of insulated 20 or 22 guage wire (you can use the inner conductors from the audio cable mentioned above).

* Two large uninsulated ring terminals that will fit over the mounting shaft of the pots on your guitar.

* Heavy duty aluminum foil

* Craft spray trim adhesive or an equivalent?

* Electrical insulating tape (also nice to have some heat-shrink tubing but not critical).

* Either a small bottle of rubber cement or thin conductive copper self-stick tape or non-ferrous conductive paint.

--------------------------

Whew.. that was a long list. I'm still a total n00b when it comes to soldering but I'd like to give this a shot sometime - so any help here would be welcome.

Not to pour cold water... but really, this isn't an easy job. You risk damaging your parts easily. Do consider carefully... and if you do decide to carry on, you better get some practice.

Anyway, does your HSS Cort hum a lot?

Shred - Thanks for the advice - have to admit that the guitarnuts shielding guide looks fairly intimidating. There's a bit of hum while using the Cort's neck single coil - the GT8 seems to suppress most of it though and I'm quite used to it.

Well, this isn't so much of a priority really - but I've been getting annoyed increasingly by this crackling sound whenever I turn the volume knob or flick the pickup selector switch. While this has nothing to do with the 60 cycle hum, if I'm going to have to open up the guitar anyway, I was wondering if I'd be any worse off by attempting to shield it :D

Anyway, this post was more for future reference if and when I became brave (or foolish enough) to attempt the mod.

Well... i guess... for a start... getting some contact cleaner to clean your crackly pots will be tops.

Then head down to Sim Lim and scout around there to get a feel of the cost and what the hell those components are. :D

well if ur wrecking it anyways..mind if i pull a malmsteen with it...play a whole concert then go backstage get ur guitar and smash it on stage...WOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....what a rush... :D :D

I ended up just using shielding paint so I didn't implement the one taught by GuitarNuts. But I'll try to reply you as much as I know:

*Desoldering pump or bulb - I never used it. Think you can Google Image it. Sim Lim Tower.

* Resin-core electrical solder - Solder. Google Image it. Sim Lim Tower.

* 1" audio cable - Sim Lim Tower. I can't remember the exact shop I got from, but if you want, I bought like 10"++ so I can sell you. PM if interested.

* Ring terminals - Any hardware store. If you live near Bedok, I can show you where there's a variety. I think HomeFix has a variety as well. Sim Lim Tower is a little hard to find as a lot of things all over the place.

* Aluminium Foil - You can actually buy alum foil for the whole pickguard alone online. Or you can cut and paste one. Available generally everywhere, but I'm not sure which ones are good.

* Trim Adhesive - ArtFriend. I have a bottle unused, can sell you or lend you.

You can also use copper foil, available at Art Friend. You'll have to "hammer" the foil in.
