Yamaha Nathan East Signature Bass

tried it at yamaha..

neck thru, great tone
sort of those kind of platty punchy single coil sound (as its 2 jazz pups)
really gd for fingerstyle and slap but if u've small hands u might suffer on the huge wide neck..

I remember Nathan East once mentioned that he played 6 string basses not really for the extended range but because of his extremely long fingers, which made playing on "normal" 4-string basses uncomfortable. He's primarily a groove-oriented player, which sees him not really using the ERB to it's fullest potential on most records I hear him on.

My P's neck is kinda big for me too though... ( I digress )

i've got rather big hands but i enjoy playing of my fender jazz's c shaped neck. pretty gay huh, u2's bassist wad quoted as saying that the jazz neck was more "feminine". but it depends on your left hand technique. the proper way to hold the neck is with the 4 fingers curled and the thumb on the back of the neck. but honestly not many people do that. i compromise abit and its not a good thing, but i still like my fingers to be able to access all the notes in the chord

i tried the ne bass b4 at yamaha.

the preamp is v versatile, could get a wide range of tones from it. both fingerstyle and slap sound amazing! managed to get the smooth slap sound you hear on 4play's records.. bass is light too. with that said, the $ tag is a serious hindrance...

tried it once before, when i had a friend working part-time at yamaha. fantastic bass, but the price tag is a killer haha. $3.6k is already a good price for a 1st hand. the original price was like almost $5k.

IMO the preamp is good, its quite versatile and being able to turn that mid shift on and off makes it easy to set two sounds, or to switch sounds on the fly with just a flick of the switch, or rolling the tone knob.

IMO, the front jazz p/u ,if eqed right, can cop some of the P bass feel when soloed.

Considering the price tag, I'd say its hard to go wrong with an active JJ config, unless you are into the MM or passive P sounds. It's got some pretty thoughful features, but it's probably more biased to fingerstyle and funk as previously mentioned, and if you're the type that switches basses often, this may not be a worthy investment.
