What do you think about the mm8 for someone who's just started out on piano with the interest of eventually using it as a tool for composing?

Are the features and the sounds something that i will appreciate, and actually be useful, or is a basic digital piano (etc. p-85) a better choice?

Thanks so much!

MM8 is good to have for piano playing and music sequencing

you may like to consider that by the time you learn to play

the piano well, there maybe newer models launched.

How would anyone know what you will or will not , can or can not appreciate? That said, I suspect MM8 will be more inspirational for song ideas/composition for the average dude esp when the arppegiators are taken into account. Go try it yourself and tell us your findings. In the meantime, prepare your budget as they don't cost the same.

MM8 is toward budget sound design. I remember there is a better syth than this model. Anyway you can use it as a sound design or stage piano. But it is not for sequencing. Only Motif is suitable for composing.

I reckon you need 88 weighted keys?

Have yu tried it yet??? while ur in Yamaha, try the DGX630 and see if you might the arranger keyboard way of working

Hi there,

What is the difference between a synth and a digital piano? As far as i know, a synth allows you to manipulate/create sounds. But say when triggering an acoustic piano sound, don't all keyboards draw from samples (recordings) of real pianos, the only difference being the quality? Correct me if i'm wrong..

Yes i need 88 weighted keys to practice playing the piano on! Some more interesting sounds might help with ideas too though, along with a sequencer.

Some additional questions i have regarding the MM8:

- is 32 notes of polyphony a problem?
- is half-damper capability important for piano playing?

i was at thomson plaza Yamaha today
and found out that the MM8 is only $1325
whereas the P85 costs about $1065.

with such a small difference in price, MM8 should
be the choice.

hi there. I have bought the other day. According to the budget, it's totally great and comfortable with many basic functions. Well, i have played music for quite a while, and i think MM8 serve me just nice. I read some posts, the guys were right. The recording functions are not that great. There's only 5 songs with 8 tracks available. And the internal memory isn't big enough, so it gets full very easy. YOu have to delete some tracks or songs or move to your usb before you can record again. Compared to other keyboard, the recording may go up to 16 tracks or more, and recording as much as you want.
However, it has 88 keys, GHS (graded hammer standard), which are very intuitive and nice. Catchy patterns, very nice arpeggios and lots of nice tones. Integrated the mega voices. It's good for me though, coz when i compose, i prefer using the computer, so it's not a big deal for me with the recording. But if you really focus on recording, mm8 may not be a good solution for you. Go to plaza sing, they have a display of mm8, you can play it before considerring buying. Hope this helps
