Yamaha CVP202 vs P120 vs CLP130

Feel - I think they are all the same generation of graded hammer keyboard (ie like a real piano, the lower keys are heavier while the higher registers are lighter).

Sound, never heard or played them so don't know. The P120 seems to have 3 velocity layers + 1 layer for damper pedal and also release samples (ie triggering a sample while you release the keys - so create the resonance like a real piano) - this does not seem to be in the other 2 clavinovas you mentioned.

The Clavinovas and the P series Stage Pianos quite different in terms of their built in functions. Interesting that you are comparing them together. Are you looking for a Stage Piano or a Digital Piano that mainly sits at home?

hey..thks for ur reply.

actually not sure how I should decide. but these r the models im considering. thats why seeking advice here. wats the main diff between stage piano and digital piano other than portability?

I suggest you go to the Yamaha Website and look through the specs.

i did..but dun really understand alot of the terms used. and how to tell snd quality from the specs? thks.

Then the next thing to do - go to Yamaha and play around with them. Hear and feel them for yourself. Nothing beats trying the real thing.

OK then. Let's try it this way.

What do you want the piano for? What do you want to do with it?

Sounds like what you want is a piano with a headphone jack. What "other features" are "desirable"? Do you want to play piano with auto accompaniment? Do you want to sequence with it? Do you want to lug the piano around or will you be content with it sitting in your living room?

If you want auto accompaniment (to sing along with what you are playing), the CVP series is what you want. If you want to play piano and accompaniment is not important, then the CLP series is what you want. Which model of Clavinova? The most practical suggestion is: cost and looks. If you want a Clavinova, make sure it blends with your furniture.

If you would like to move it around, then will you want the P series (it has no accompaniment). The P-250 is pretty good - I think it has the latest generation of the Yamaha 3-layered piano sound and graded-hammer keyboard. It should be the nearest thing to a real piano you can get, excluding the looks.

CLP 130 is $2375, CLP 150 is $2900. CVP 202 promo selling $2500. But since CVP 202 is the lowest model of the CVP model, im just wondering if should buy it or buy CLP 130 or CLP 150 since the prices r quite near. just top up or lesser abit. Functions wise, not sure..cos im not sure wat all these digital pianos can do nowadays. i tink these can discover more after i buy. wat im more concern now is the sound quality and feel. Is CVP 202 better than the other 2? if it is of cos seems more rationale to buy it since more functions also. if it is better than 130 but worse than 150 then I can look at the features and decide if i wana pay more? if its even worse than 130 then of cos i will just consider 130 and 150. P 250 is out of budget. May consider P120 since the price also arnd the same? But if most of the time i just put at home the cabinet pianos seem more worth it?

thks alot..

hi. i'm a performer for yamaha for their pianos and i do know a thing or two about them after these years.

1) You don't want a Clavi. Trust me on that
2) If you want a yamaha that has excellent sound, excellent touch, and excellent quality, u want a Yamaha P-250

even the BEST clavis's have weird sticky keys that feel awfully light and fake. the sounds at best, come through as sub-standard.

don't be fooled by the specs they try to advertise along with the clavi. it really is one of the worst pianos around.

Go for the P-250. If u dun't like yamaha, i recommend the Korg SP-200. the feel is much better than the SP-300 or 500. don't ask me why. But the keys are lighter than that of the 250.

250 keys closely resemble the excellent touch of the Grand Pianos, and its DSS CFIII grand sampled. contact me if u need more information.

get the P200 then, if P250's out of ur budget. but i would, for the excellent sound patches. infact, i have one. :)

if your budget must go lower, consider the Korg SP-200. Less than 1.5K. Or the Yamaha P120-S. Keys are lighter though, if you're a pianist used to playing on grands, your fingers won't get used to it. and once u finally do, you can't go back to playing grands.

thks so much for ur reply. but it came too late. i already bought CVP202. :(
is it the worst among all 3 choices i was considering cos i only realised no dynamic sampling until i bought it?

well no offense to a buyer who just had a new buy, but if i were u i'll sell it off immediately, albeit at a small loss...

the keys aren't really good. and the sound quality's quite bad, cause its front projection. can't hear shit if ur audience's facing the other way.

keys plasticy as well.

only saving grace, is that it has an EXCELLENT drum and acomp sequencer inside. the drums and beats in there are FIRST CLASS.. try out the multi-finger and whole chord comp function. feels like u're in a damn big band!
