Based on the Electro Harmonix 1973 "Ram's Head" Big Muff Pi that Hendrix relied on this Big Muff for his smooth, mellow, Electric Lady sound. Other famous users are David Gilmour of Pink Floyd and J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. to name a few. The 73 Ram's head is known to be smoother than the V1 Triangle but with more dirt than the Black Russian.
The thing that really sets the 73 Ram's Head apart is the incredible sustain you get with this pedal. It is designed for the guitarist who wants his ax to sing like a hummingbird, with sweet violin-like sustaining sound. The sustain control allows you to optimize long sustain with a hint of harmonic distortion. A common problem with "Muff" Style pedals are its inabilities to cut through a dense mix. Therefore, the '73 Ram's Head added a 3-way toggle, allowing you to switch between a scooped (same as original), flat or boosted mid range.
